Is there another all black ear besides black magic? If so I NEED IT! I am so in love with black leaves. I bought about 5 different black magic last year & I seem to have managed to kill all but one tiny one. It looks about the same now as it did when it arrived last year.

Your doing something wrong, do you heavily fertilize?

Try a soil transfusion:

Bambi....I'm very surprised that you're having a difficult time with Black Magic! I've had great luck with them....lots of sun and lots of water! They grow & grow! Post a pic of yours!

Bward:

Your plants are beautiful! Are they planted in pots or in the ground?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Does this count? Its just a close up of my upright EE. Its it's first leaf. I dont have any pics of the generic ones I used to have as the winter was harsh last year like this year and they all died. They came back for 2 years and multiplied before that

Hi, do you have a different pic? Thats TOO close to identify! Nice green color though ! your soil must have the proper PH.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

delecie, all are in the ground except the Mickey Mouse.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Sorry I was tring to make it look almost as big as all yours.
The package says
Mid summer Blooming Upright Elephant's Ear
flowers June-August
Height 32"

Im still debating on whether to put it in the ground only because I dont want to forget about it come fall, but, since I have a banana in the ground I should probrably put it over there so I can let it go crazy.

Thats a Macrorrhiza "Maki" , a Hawaiian Cv. If you paid less than $30 you did VERY well. Keep some time release fertilizer handy as it gets huge. You still have time to put it in the ground. Remember to mulch the heck out of it come fall so it comes back in Spring '05. On a side note, I think its funny how the labels always say: Upright Elephant ear. As if there was a "underground elephant ear" or a "side growing elephant ear".LOL -There are over 72 varities of Upright Elephant ear, you'd think they'd get more specific. (or just don't know) Those Wal-mart label employees are a strange bunch!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

You said it. Even with as little as I know I knew there had to be more than one type of these. Thank you Thank you so much.
If you said less than $30 then I did realy good and Im feeling even better about my purchase. ; ) I bought this at HD or Lowes for $5.95 for two bulbs.
LOL I think a side growing EE would be a sight to see myself.
And huge EEs are something I love, I guess they mislabled the size it would get but all the better for me. : D

Interlachen, FL

Again, Walmart, or in your case Lowes mentality. (no offense intended). Actually I can only think of 4 out of 72 species that are SMALLER than 32". Your Maki should see 5-7 feet before your first freeze! Half day full sun will accomplish this. I was thinking internet prices at your plant's current size, I cannot get Maki at my local shops, or nurseries for that matter. Had to get mine mail order. One persons weed is another persons....something...something..

Gotcha. And no offense taken on the "walmart", "Lowes" mentality, I totaly agree with you. I cant count the number of times Ive asked questions and no one had a clue as to what I was talking about, but if they couldve answered even one or two they would have made a sale. Now remember Im not the most scientific minded person and will often buy something without knowing the whole story but "come on".

Interlachen, FL

If common knowledge was so common.....everyone would have it ! - In thier defense: I think the whole elephant ear craze is still too early for anyone to know much.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Thats true. It happens with every plant that is the new "craze".
Im just happy I got lucky, and happy I started this baby from a tuber. I have one more I havnt started yet but thinking of making a gift of it. Just wanted to make sure of what I had before I gave it. So again thanky for the info. Way cool.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

No fair Draven! Your Alo mac is actually an Alo mac! LOL I bought the pkgd ones last year and ended up with plain old esculentas. Lucky you!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Lucky is right, with my luck it shoulda been a dandylion.

Interlachen, FL

If the bulb has thick brown stripes around it, it will be Colocasia Esculenta. The good news is you can eat it if you ever run out of potatoes. Hungry?

Alocasiaaddict, I can't wait until my alocasia gold gets that large. Do you by chance know the hardiness zone for ag? I live in 8a and grow many alocasia in the ground year round with lots of mulch. I always keep a second one in safety in the greenhouse-just in case.

Interlachen, FL

Where did you get your Alocasia Gold? From me? Upload a pic.

Zone 7a , so you should be fine.

Yep, lots of grapes. They grow everywhere just like the xanthasomas and calacasias do.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

This thing.... I think it's an ear just appeared at the edge of my property near the cannas last year. My DH (the plant expert was insisting it was a canna) LOL What is it? It seems to do better when it get covered by the bamboo, another univited guest in this area. These plants must send a message to their relatives "go there... it's a free for all... no pruning, no throwing away"

Bambi I love the look of that one!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cool ear, Bambi.

Interlachen, FL

Hey Bambi, I thought I knew them all, THANKS ALOT! Now I feel dumb. Thats a weird cross between a Macrorrhiza and Emerald green. How tall does it get?
