Getting location from newbies

I updated the login page today. Now, when someone logs in, the system checks to see if we have their location.

If we don't, it does this:

If they are in the United States (I can tell by the way the browser is talking - american accent means it's U.S.) I simply ask for the zipcode.

If they are from elsewhere, I ask for their city and country.

Then, once they enter this information, they can proceed. So, this is still not required information, but it's a little naggy and I think it'll be effective.

Cool!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

American accent, eh? Which one? Boston, New Jersey, Carolina, general southeastern drawl, Texas twang, midwest "non-accent", California valley-girl speak, or....?) hehehehe

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Browsers can talk (in accents)? I luv it!

Great idea, dave. I'm sure it'll help!

Chuckling...

Actually, I know what country someone is from because I have a database of all the IP addresses in the world, and the country in which those IPs are registered. So I can at least tell which country you're in. :)

(But I liked the accent idea better!)

re: midwest "non-accent"

Made me laugh. This time in California is going on 25 years and people still ask me what part of the mid-west I'm from.

The first time around in California was in the late 60's and everyone looked and talked "funny."

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Yeah, they call this flyover land also. This might change as both Presidental canidates are here often this year, & we have KEVIN GARRNET as a resident! Congradulations to him!
Seriously, it will be nice to know where everyone is from when you read their posts.
I like people signing with their first name also.
Seems to make everything more neighborly.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Maybe you just gotta ask! The ole saying, "Ask. What's the worse that can happen?" seems to apply.
