and I hear this "thonking". I look, and from a distance, under the street lamp I see a small animal, with what looks like a tin can connected to it's nose. As I watched I could tell this animal was in distress.
I was going over the "Where the Red Fern Grows" stories about how racoons are attracted to tin cans, so I'm squinting, trying to tell if this animal was a racoon or not.
The animal squirmed it's way over to the curb, but then, squirmed it's way back over to the street, can still pasted to it's face.
I looked harder and thought "no, that is not a baby coon - that is a very scared kitty".
Karrie to the rescue. So I started walking over, slowly and cautiously, as not to scare it (like I could at that point anyways, poor thing). A car came by, and I motioned it off with my hand, to stay out of my way.
I picked up the kitty and removed the can (didn't take much - only reason why it was on there is because he or she was thonking on it trying to remove it). The car ended up being my neighbor, and I brought over the can, laughing almost in tears and told him the story. Too bad we didn't have the camera ready for that - that poor cat was looking pretty ridiculous - could have made $100,000 on Americas Funniest Home Videos. Turns out this can is "Pedigree Healthy Start for Puppies". God only knows where that kitty found it.
If it was one of the strays, it just found good human contact.
Anyways - this made my evening. I love saving pets if I can. (as long as they aren't racoons or rottweilers - they scare me)
Out doing my evening garden stoll.....
It does make you feel good to help those sweet little critters. Are you going to keep the kitty ?
No! We already have a kitty. It was a sweet little thing, so hopefully it has a home and was just up to mischief.
Glad you saw the little sprite. :)
more like I heard the sprite (thonk thonk) but indeed, very glad!
Karrie20x - so glad you gave a helping hand to an animal in distress. I see to many poeple just walk/swerve around an animal. It just breaks my heart everytime. They last one we helped out was a HUGE turtle about 35 lbs trying to get across the highway. Instead of be polite people just honked and said vulgar things because we were in the road. Good for you and bless your kindness.
Kitty (My real name, no pun intended)
ty kitty - I knew I was doing the right thing, in my heart. THAT is what matters.
Believe it or not, I always smush the cans before putting them in the garbage. You never know.
I even put jar lids on frimly before tossing into the trash.
................ About 25 years ago one of my barn cats showed up with his head stuck in a mayonaisse jar. While 'thonking ' it the jar broke and he ended up with a jagged jar for a collar. It was so scary. he was OK tho, I just wrapped his head in a thick towel and gave the jar neck a good rap with a hammer....
......................I guess I don't need to tell ya that I will never forget that day, when throwing out jars and cans to this day. Never!
What a great story about the kitty. Thank you for helping him/her.
Many years ago I had an adorable dog named "Alphie" . He looked like a miniature sheepdog with a huge plumming tail that sat cocked up on his back. One night I went to our annual exhibition (country fair to y'all) straight from work and had arranged for my next door neighbours to let Alfie out and feed him dinner for me. Well, after a long day at work and walking around the fairgrounds all evening, I dragged myself home, shoes off, bare feet, dawg tired only to see "Alfie" staring out at me from behind the glass door of my duplex entrance........with this funny expression on his face. Head cocked, hair flat to his head, pitch dark. I entered the bldg entrance and greeted Alfie, who was more than glad to see me. I went to my front door of my apt and there was a large empty mixing bowl sitting on the floor right outside my door...........taped to the door was a note: Georgy: Alfie got sprayed by a skunk. Didnt know if you had any tomatoe juice or not so (arrow pointing down) I left you some.......well........I looked into this pristine bowl, then looked at Alfie, who was licking his grey chops coated in hardened tomatoe juice and just gave it up right there ! OH MY GAWD !!! It was 2:30 a.m.........weeknight........feet killing me..........dog covered in skunk AND dry tomatoe juice.....this is going to be an all nighter!! Into the tub with Alfie. All I had on hand were canned, stewed tomatoes and smoosh they went. You havent lived until you have given a sheepdog a massage in the middle of the night with canned tomatoes. They wouldnt go down the drain either, afterwards. You had to be there.
Alfie is long gone now, but I bet he is up in heaven still laughing about the night he got revenge for my desertion ! hehe I loved that dog.
April - canned tomatoes in the bath tub? THAT is funny! :)
Guess Alfie must have thought that tomato juice was a systemic! ;) How funny!
Yep ! Canned tomatoes in the bathtub. It was too late to start up the blender and I dont think I was even thinking at that hour! Poor Alfie had tomatoe bits stuck in his fur forever after that.
And yes, the neighbour that left the open bowl of tomatoe juice on the hallway floor for Alfie to drink.. WAS blonde !! LOL
lol! how funny! poor little thing!
Amazing, isn't it, what our animals can get into?
I always have to either cut or tie those six-ring plastic things that hold the six-packs of soda, before I throw them away, after seeing ducks (and other animals) ensnarled in them.
My kitties have to inspect every grocery bag that comes into the house, and love to play with the bags. Before discarding the plastic bags, I now tie them in knots, after seeing Emily streaking across the floor, caught in one of the bags. Silly cat! I worry about kids possibly getting snarled in them too.
Nice going Karrie! You have a good heart.
Jean
oh Jean, that's a cute pic! Animals do the darndest things! They are a great form of entertainment! :)
Thats hilarious Sweetpea .......the cat looks so proud of his "ROBE" .....hehe...what a riot !!! I once had a collie that ripped up road kill bubblegum off the street and chewed it !!! He actually chewed gum !!! I mean serious chewing. My oldest son had a paper route and used to take the dog along. While he ran up the driveway with the paper, the dog sat obediently (or lazily) at the end of the driveway. When they were all finished the route, my son stopped at a local convenience store for a hard-earned choc milk and choc bar........he would buy the dog 2 pcs of gum (Double Bubble) and sit on the curb reading the little enclosed comic to the dog while he contentedly chewed his gum! It was a riot! Old Roger has gone on to dog heaven now and I hope he and Alfie and a few others are there waiting for me.
Sarah loves gum, too! She chews it for a while, but swallows it. She gets right in your face if you're chewing gum - she wants it!
Yes LOL Roger did that too........right in your face.......sniffing your mouth........waiting to get your gum. GAWD I loved that dog ! Thanks for sharing and bringing back sweet memories. sniff sniff
I sure wish I could edit the thread name! It's supposed to be "stroll", not stoll. Boy I must have had tired fingers at the time.
Almost as funny as someone "Stalking their brugs"
