I went out to check on my seedlings........

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

:o)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I am NOT going back down there again. They should come from the wildlife preserve and "relocate" the two biggest ones, at least that's what I'm hoping. My main gardens are behind a very strong fence and gators don't climb so I will garden in the fenced part of the property. Those seedlings will just have to survive with minimal care for now!
We have a wonderful assortment of wildlife here, javalinas, pumas, oscelots, raccoons, bobcats, gators, rattlesnakes......anybody wanna come visit?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Susie...you do know they can DIG.....like under a fence?
and it is breeding season..they'll be looking for somewhere to lay those eggs......

and then there will be lots of crocagators running all over your yard.....

better send me all your plants to save them from the invasion......

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I do not blame you one bit Cala....what if that big male alligator is blonde and gets confused about who the lady alligator is?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Susie,this might help....

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I googled alligator mating...was trying to find out how they do it for kell!!!!!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

cc,,,well...what did you find out???? Many of us don't know and would like to know!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Didn't get any further than that picture...LOL

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Are they like crocidiles? I have it seen on the crocidile hunter. I dont quite remember how... I know its in water.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Probably in muddy water...so probably no one really knows!! That's probably why you couldn't find it!!

Whitewater, WI

LOLOLOLOL, CC :)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

LOL.....I had never thought of it, but now since Kell brought it up, I'm wanting to know too! Dang...I'm wondering if the female gator thinks the male is handsome? Hmmmm....wonder what the attraction is?? LOL

Whitewater, WI

Teeth, maybe?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm thinkin...bigger is better......

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL What a discussion. I should have been in here sooner. Great sign, CC.

BJ thanks for the info on the lady spider. I didn't care which it was when I smushed it over the garage floor. LOL

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

OK....it looks like I had to google myself to get an answer...this is a link I found most helpful... http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/cnhc/potm-may00.html

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

cc...climbing back up in the chair....while LMAO

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

well there position looked kinda uncomfortable!! if go down to bank any more they love pizza.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK, that does it, no more even going out in the back yard. I don't care if all the brugs are in full bloom! I wanted to plant a new vine I got, it will just sit in the pot.
When is this gator mating season over anyway?? If she digs a big hole in my seedling bed, I'm gonna make shoes out of her and have a gator egg omlett! If I wake up and find a gator in my pool, I wonder if the little genie thingie that cleans the bottom of the pool will suck her into the filter?? I kind of doubt it though, she will probably eat the cleaner!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL cc ~ great sign!
Susie, I would be vewy, vewy nervous if I were you.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

The link said 2 to 3 months is the amount of time the mating season could last Cala. It didn't talk about how long the eggs need to incubate and how long Mommy would have a nasty disposition. I would start watching those Discovery shows that cover the handling of the nasty beasts...you could become the newest gator handler (one arm wrapped around it's snout while the other takes care of watering your seedlings)!

So Cala, you have the proof that they do exist, not a tale anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better not be trying to get night time pics.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey Susie girl, maybe Mr. Alligator prefers blondes. And that does not sound too bad to me! When was the last time your husband fought over you, sending signals to all the males on your street: tail waving, jaw opening, geysering, head lifting, musk gland secretions, vocalisations, and infrasonic pulses which travel through the ground or water????

And when last did your DH shimmy up to you tenderly to touch, then rubbing his jaw across you, and blow bubbles underneath your body, using chemical perfumes, and rumbling softly? Sounds like true love to me.

Just be real careful from now on when you lift your head high while talking esp. if you are near the water's edge.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

lolol Kell! And here Callas DH got all the credit for that, and it was the gator??? ;o)

Oh my GOSH!!! I couldn't read thought the whole thread. Gators give me a case of the woolies. Is there a fence between you and that critter? Are you scared of them? There is NO way I'd be anywhere close to something with that many BIG teeth. Do you worry about you pets? Mine would never leave the yard.
Be careful Susie....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kristi, there is a fence. My poor kitties like to go out and wander around but now they are not allowed out of the house! I will not be going down to the edge of the water for a while. The worst thing, there is a woman at the end of the street that feeds them! Now how stupid is that? They will lose all fear of humans. I hope they go down to her house and stay!!(she is a half mile from me). I think I will talk to the relocating people and see if they will please come take these two big ones away before they eat somebody's pets or children. My neighbors black lab likes to swim in the water.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Your neighbor does not look like Betty White, does she?

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

Susie be careful. All jokes aside that does scare me a bit.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

You should ask the relocation people to talk to the lady who feeds them and explain the dangers to her.

I grew up here in Louisiana and we used to go frog gigging at night in the swamps, and the alligators would be swimming all around in the water near our boat, you can shine the light on them and their eyes are red in the light, but they never bothered us, they were more afraid of us than we were of them. BUT if you start feeding them, like somebody said, they lose their fear. AND they do ferociously guard a nest of eggs.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Since you can't check on your seedlings there anymore due to the gator problem, lol

Here are some of your seedlings growing here

Looking just great Mary!!!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Cala, when people start feeding alligators they start associating you with food and that is not a good thing, you really need to tell they fish and wild life authorities about this. I could not live around water that had alligators or crocs in it. scary

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

In NY state its illegal to feed deer.....

gotta be a law about feeding crocagators.....

its too funny,I just pulled up my spell checker cause illegal was spelled wrong......but crocagator wasn't!LOL
