Grassless Lawn?

Tilton, NH(Zone 4a)

I wasn't sure where to put this, so here goes...

We don't like grass around here. For one thing, we haven't got a mower. Anyway, we now have a lot of bare spots and will soon have more. I put my foot down about sowing all of them into wildflowers. For one thing, they tend to partly die out and get really patchy, for another, they get so weedy looking at times. I am ok with not having a smooth green lawn, but I do want it to look nice. The plan we have come up with is to sow mostly white clover, with some other things mixed in. I am thinking some nice perennial herbs such as creeping oregano or thyme. The white clover is likely to start dying out in two years, as it is a biennial, and hopefully the herbs would then take over. The areas in question are low to no traffic, and we like bees around here - Dad is a beekeeper, and we put in a lot of bee-plants.

Has anyone done anything like this, or do you know of any resouces I could consult?

Thanks,
Cedar

How about checking with your local/state agricultural extension or with the horticultural dept. of the closest college. Those are both great resources in this area.

When I was a child, we lived across the street from a little old lady that actually had ALL CLOVER (must have been a certain type) for her lawn. No grass at all. I remember it being pretty. I would have no idea what variety it was, or what the upkeep was.

Marcia, thank you for your suggestion. I will see If I can find someone to talk to closer to home.

Karrie, that is encouraging:)

I went through all our seeds and found that we had a pound of whote clover (with inoculant) and Dad and I mixed in some other seeds that we had to make it interesting, and then he sowed it day before yesterday. It poured all yesterday, so the deed is done. The west side yard of the house is bare earth right now, and that is where we put it. I had to get it in quickly before the weeds got a head start. So I will let you know how that goes... We will be tearing up the East side of the house in mid may. That will be my other experimental patch.
