pee gee bush or tree

erie, PA(Zone 5a)

I ordered 2 pee gee hydranga trees and they look like little bushes right now. How do you train them into a tree shape. Both plants lack a central trunk, all the branches are the same thickness and length, growing from a cental ground level clump. Any ideas?

HI, Any chance of using that foam covered green wire and drawing the stems close together? I planted willow stems close together and it formed a " tree". Also, I had a PG several years ago-on one stem-when it was older, I had to stake it, because the flowers/branches became too heavy for the brittle trunk and the shallow roots.

Thanks MarcaGeiger,I'll try tieing them togather, it seems the most logical solution. I also read that the more you prune the PG the bigger and more mumerious the plumes becomes, maybe even top heavy. I'll have to check back with you in 3 years after it gets established and let you know how its doing.

HI, I hope it does well for you. The bushes here get pruned of die-back, stuff in the way or by bunnies!! I really loved the bush though, so may look to replacing it.

Snipper,
Glad you posted this question. I bought 2 bare-root pee gees from Lowe's this year & they are the same way. I figured I was just going to have to leave them as shrubs cuz if I cut all the stocks but 1, I would forever be fighting shoots.
I am going to do the tie together method too. Hope we are both successful! :^) Thanks Marcia.

I was talking to a customer in my shop, and he suggested twing them around a stick or pole kind of like a ponytail. Might work, will have to wait awhile for some growth on the stocks though, too small right now.
