New Subscribers

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Since we don't have a lot of subscribers, could we maybe show the newbies each week or something? Alot of them don't know about the Welcome Forum, and just kinda wander around. I sometimes wonder what they think of us, and if they get discouraged. I know of a few folks that are still confused, and rarely post :(

I know I'm probably one of many that recommend DG to total strangers, lol, it would be nice to see the new subscibers acknowleged, and introduced. We would know how to direct and/or help them too, wouldn't we?

If nothing else, could they be directed to the Welcome Forum upon their confirmation? I'd like to see a more personalized welcome of some kind.

Thanks, Dave!
(glad I wasn't shy, lol)

vi, that's a good idea. I know our homepage is getting really looooong with all the links in the right-hand column, but it would be nice to see a list of "yesterday's new subscribers" after the birthdays.

I think when someone subscribes, they are directed to the Welcome mat forum - of course, not everybody posts there (some jump right into the other forums, others would prefer to just lurk ;o)

Okay, better late than never! The feature is now added!

I was just going to comment about this. I like it. Welcome new subscribers!

Thanks Dave!

(now which one is my friend from Georgia?)

I think it's great that you are doing the "new subscriber" thing. I was one of those new people just wandering around.... I don't recall being directed to the Welcome Mat forum but then again, I don't always read the directions when I can jump right into something! So I lurked, then did a few tentative posts. After a couple months I realized there was a Welcome Mat forum but then felt I was too "old" to go there.

Oh Dave This is Great!
Now They Will Feel a Bit More Welcomed!
Maybe Under the 'New Subscribers!'...
You Could Add in the Green Box...."Welcome"!
(In an Exciting Italic Type Style)

I Tried for 1 Week to Make a Welcome Post in the Welcome Forum for Each New Subscribing Member Coming on in March...but...
Then I Thought it Looked Like I Was the Welcome Person for the Site.
All the Posts Had My Screen Name Always Listed as the Starter.

There is Getting to be A Lot of New Subscribing Members!

Congratulations!

I know it makes a big difference if someone takes a moment to make a new member feel welcome. (And if several of you do, it REALLY makes 'em feel warm and fuzzy ;o)

Dave, maybe in the box, include their name and only the date (not the time) they signed up, so the list smooshes (technical term) together a little? And at the bottom, a note to "Remember to visit the Welcome Mat" with a hyperlink - it would serve as a reminder for current subscribers as well as a hint to newbies when they see their name there?

Thanks Dave!

That's a really nice added feature :)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

hmmmm - mentioned this a month or two ago - glad someone else had the same idea! ...just thot I was being ignored at the time??? :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

nahhh, sometimes we just gotta "pile on" to get something to the "tower of terror" that is Dave's list of to-do's ;o)

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

I like it! How long will those new member's names stay there?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I think it displays the most recent ten subscribers, which means they'll typically scroll off within a day or less...

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

This is a great idea! Would it be possible to list their location instead of or in addition to the time they joined? For me, I would be prone to get in touch with people near me. To look up each one separately would be time consuming. Or maybe a hover?

That's a good idea LLK! It's pretty much a "given" that they've signed up in the very recent past, so having their locale might be more helpful to readers than their signup time/date...

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes, yes, yes! I tell so many folks about this place, I'm curious to see who signs up. And we'd never know their DG names!

And Dave, while you're at it, how about showing those folks as
"Welcome new subscribers" as someone else mentioned.

I love it! And the date and time is not really needed and the location would be great. Jo

I have implemented the suggestions given.

As for the location, unfortunately, most folks don't give us their location (even though I do request that they do on the homepage right after they signup) and as a result, we don't know where many of them are from. So, in these instances, it gives a "Location unknown" message for their locale.

That's a great idea! Welcome from one newbie to another! Mere

The way I see it, if a subscriber or member wants to disclose their location, that's their personal choice. Some do, some don't. Some eventually tell people in threads, after they become more comfortable with the people at Dave's.

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

I really wish Dave would make location mandatory, at least zone and state, or country; it really helps to place a member in 'context', also provides valuable information for when they ask or share information on gardening. Seems impersonal enough with just the dg user-names.

A nice new feature though!
