??? MULCH ???

Bensenville, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm not sure as to posting here but couldn't find anything regarding this question. I have some of that red mulch and a neighbor asked why I haven't taken it off so my ? is I got it for 2 reasons one for appearance and the other it's suppose to help keep moisture in the ground, being I planted for flowers to come up am I suppose to take the mulch off??? Thanks for any help and or suggestions! Denise

Do you mean wood mulch? Or red plastic mulch?

The wood mulch stays on. I know some people rake it all off when it starts to deteriorate and then they compost it or something, and replace with new mulch. I just leave mine on forever & ever and add to it when it gets cruddy looking.

Yes the wood mulch says on. But you can make little holes for the flowers to come up as the idea is that mulch it helps keep weeds under control by smothering them. Another thing is that if you live in a humid area, you want to keep the mulch about an inch from the base of the plant, so that the plant doesn't rot.
I also let the mulch decompose right on the ground, for the plants and then add new mulch as needed.

Oh Thankyou, yes when I did the planting I moved the red wood mulch away to plant but is still spread around. Mobi it does get somewhat humid here in Illinois we're zone 5 in the summer. Being that I planted last fall should I wait to see what comes up or move it so I don't get the plants rotted??? Thanks Denise

Denise, you and I are in similar climates. Often people here remove the mulch so the soil will warm up faster and then replace the mulch when the weather gets hot. Since mulch is an insulator, it can keep the soil cold which slows down plant growth and retards seed germination. Removing the mulch can also help the soil dry out if it has been a soggy winter.

NoH2o, Thanks! It appears as though quite a bit is actually coming thru the mulch it's not a heavy load of mulch on there and I'm still learning about mulch, thanks for your advice, I have some areas w/mulch and some not so I decided I'm experimenting and hope it all works out! Denise
