My first Lilac blooms opened up today... oh the smell!
It brings back so many memories.... the lilac I have was taken from my moms lilac bush which grew to be huge, mine is only about 6 feet tall right now.
My prom pictures were always taken in front of that Lilac bush, in fact, anytime it was in bloom seemed like a good time for my mom to take pictures in front of it. :-)
I doubt that I'm the only one that smelling lilac brings back fond memories. :-)
It smells better than it looks!
Lilac was my Mom's favorite too. When they bloom I think of her more than usual. Jo
Lilac reminds me of my grandmother (my instiller of love for gardening). She had 3 huge ones in her yard the old purple and white old-fashioned French lilacs. At one point she got tired of all the suckers and pruning to keep them in check and eventually had my grandfather get rid of them. (I think it took him a good 2 years to really get rid of them).
After they were gone (which must have been while I was still in grade school) I always missed them in her yard. All the way up to the day she joined the Lord and my grandfather.
I'd give anything to have some of hers now. I've got three currently and would like to have more, but they are hybrids and not the old-fashioneds like she had. Only thing is that it sure seemed like the they bloomed a LONG time when I was a kid and so brief now.
(Thanks, Melissa for bringing back my grandma today.) :-)
Our lilacs are in full bloom this week. Oh how we love that scent coming in through our windows! When they bloom is about the only time of the year when my DH will go outside without me and pick a huge bunch to set beside his recliner.
Our lilacs are the oldfashioned ones with wonderful scent and lots of suckers too. I am gradually making a hedge with them. I can hardly wait till they all are blooming. Close to heaven for me. :)
Our next-door neighbor's lilac is *this* close to bursting into bloom. It is full of buds just ready to pop. I can't wait!
Melissa how big is your lilac bush in this pic?
I was just wondering, because I have one that I got 2 years ago and it finally decided to grow this year. No sign of buds or flowers yet.
Wonder how old the bush has to be before it starts to bloom?
I have mine planted right out side my bedroom window so if and when it does bloom we'll be able to enjoy the smell coming in thru the windows at night :)
(PS, Melissa did you get my e/mail??)
Having been raised in North Dakota where a garden/yard wasnt complete without the lilac bush, I can tell you I really miss them now that I live here in Texas. Just too hot here for them or I would have a back yard full of them.
