Have any of you cooks out there noticed spots inside the cans that your canned tomatoes, peppers etc. come in? I have noticed these a few times and have been throwing these things away not being sure if it's safe to eat this or not. I would really like to hear from anyone who knows about these oxidization type spots inside the cans.
Is it safe to eat???
Well, usually when I see the spots, I've already emptied the can's contents into whatever I'm making. I sure hope it's safe, because I don't like dumping out two pounds of browned ground beef or stew meat, or chicken, or whatever I'm concocting ;o)
I think it's only when it's on the outside of the can that you toss it.
But who knows, somebody's probably done some research on it somewhere.
Ask at your local University extension service. They have all the newest information on such things. After you find out please post the answer for others.
I am like Terry, I have already dumped it and use it without any problems.
Maybe that's why we feel so bad, have all these problems!
Tin!!!!! or maybe Zinc coating!!!!!!!
It's all this fad of eating Italian food, all them tomatoes. (Love 'em, myself)
Tomato sauce in s'ketti, pasta, pizza, beef stew, any veg. soup. What don't we put tomato sauce on? DH puts catsup on his eggs, Yankee thing. Scary!!
I know what you guys mean about having put it in whatever it is your making by the time you've noticed the spots inside the can. It's gotten to the point to where we empty each can in another kitchen container before it makes it's way into the mixture so we can check the can to see what's going on with it. Tomatoe sauce or diced tomatoes are the most common things with this. You're right JudithI.
Thanks Ponditis. How does one get the number for the University extention? I have our county extention for gardening but not the University one to ask about this. I will make sure to post the answer when I do find out. Thanks everyone.
I don't take chances. If it looks funny, I toss it. Period. Hey! I have some pickles from downstairs from 5 years ago! Anyone want them? lol! (better call the toxic waste clean-up crew to come pick up this so I can re-use the jars)
Your gardening extension service should be able to direct you to the Home Economics extension office.
Our home ec extension service shares the same office with the gardening one.
Wow, I never really thought much of them.
For that very reason I buy canned tomatoes by Muir Glen. Their cans are lined and look so clean and healthy!
