Just wondering how many of you believe in the ole "Good Friday" planting guide?
I think they use to say that on Good Friday it is safe to plant anything above or below ground, with no more danger of frost.
Last Friday April 9th was Good Friday, but I haven't really planted anything outside just yet.
I normally do begin my outside planting of seeds and seedlings the weekend after Good Friday but this weekend we were just tooo busy!
Plus, they are talking like we are going to have some 30* weather this coming week, and I SURE would hate to lose any of my babies!
Do you use Good Friday as your planting guide?
Good Friday Good For You?
Here in Ontario, Canada people use our Victoria Day Weekend in May as the rule of thumb to plant. It is usually the weekend before your Memorial Day. I personally don't follow it for alot of things, especially tomatoes 'cause it still gets pretty chilly here until early June.
Interesting to see how much sooner those of you in the south have a Gardening Rule of Thumb. What about states like California, Idaho, Washington? What would their month/weekend Planting Guide be? D
Last frost date up here is usually the 3rd week of June, but we generally take chances and put some stuff out on Memorial Day weekend, along with decorating the graves with pots or plants in the ground by the headstones.
Some years we have to cover things nearly every night, LOL, but it's worth the effort. It seems so good to see things growing again in the gardens.
Memorial Day is usually safe for planting tender things here. Other parts of Oregon, west of the Cascade Mt. range can plant them earlier, they have a milder climate due to the influence of the Pacific Ocean. Here we can still have frost after June 1 but thankfully not every year.
April 15th is our date to put things out. I always go by my oak tree. If it has leafed out, it is always safe.
Mother's Day is traditionally safe in NJ. However, as that was the rule in northern NJ zone 6, I think a week or two earlier should be okay at the shore in zone 7. We won't mention the freeze one year on May 28th though, when everyone lost their impatiens, and the nurseries had no more to offer either.
here, Good Friday is for planting garden peas and sweet peas. I did both last Friday and put in a little row of lettuce, too. REAL planting is usually very late May or early June. I think the official last frost date is June 5, but it is sometimes as late at the 10th or 12th of June. I won't mention the last snow date, it's just too depressing.
Well our Good Friday has come and gone and here it is the week after.....they are telling us that we are going to get down in the 30's tonight. But in my opinion we are still safe, since 32 is freezing I don't think we are going that low. Only in the hig 30's I think.
O well, I only have a few seeds started out there. Nothing that can't be replaced.
And yes there have also been times where we'd have to run out and cover stuff too. Live and learn I say.
We usually aim for Mother's Day in south central Idaho... but we've had our unpleasant surprises! Here is a link, if anyone is interested.
