Golden Lady

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Real beauty, Cala!

I've noticed in various pics I've seen that the second skirt doesn't fully drop. Mine's only bloomed three blooms so far (last fall), but all three dropped both skirts (not far, but each skirt was fully flaired).

Any ideas on why some drop and some don't?

(edited to add I'm specifically speaking of Golden Lady, here)

Carter, your color looked about like mine did last Fall.

Carter, don't know why that happens. I have CDW blooming now and some of those are dropping their skirts, some are not. I don't know why.

My CDW must have been a real Lady then, she kept her skirt up.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

She would have to in self defense hanging around with you Root!

Hope you get in soon Kell.

I pollinated this one and it was making little seedpods, then all of a sudden they fell off. Wonder what made them fall? We have had some wind(nothing new there, lol)

Cala, I don't know. My HG buds turned black and bit the dusk. I know what I did. I gave it an overdose of Cal-Mag, slow release and hare-doo. I don't think HG likes much fert. I think a handful of Cal-mag to a gallon of water is a little too strong, plus a handful of slow release, not to mention the hare-doo.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wow, that is quite a big dose of good stuff. What do you do when you feed to much?

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Water, water, water.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I didn't fertilize, but I did spray some Neem for mites. It's funny, Creamsickle, Golden Lady and L'Amour lost their pods, but Rosamond, RK and Tiara didn't. I didn't do anything different with them and L'Amour was protected from the wind. Oh well, I've got lots more buds opening so I will try again!

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Cala, I seem to get broad mites, if avid doesn't work, may try neem.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Larry, what are the symptoms of broad mites? I don't think I've ever had them, but I want to be prepared in case I see something happening that isn't synonymous with spider mites

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW! again on your pic Cala. just great. Sorry about your pods!

another bug to worry about......tell us about it Larry!

Yes, Root, you are so right for you are in big deep doo today! LOL

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Beautiful pictures!!

Broad mites causes the tip of brugs to quit growing. I will take some pics tomorrow to show you what I mean.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Broad mites are a lot smaller too. They're impossible to see with the naked eye.... well at least with my naked eyes - LOL!

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

I don't have to see em. The plants tell me, but by then the damage is done, but they recover quickly.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Larry. Will be looking forward to the pictures.

Susie,

Here is a picture of the Golden Lady you sent me last year when you were sharing all your extras. She has grown very fast, about 6 ft. tall now. She put out this big flush of blooms this month and I sure was amazed.

I do have a question though. I started it off by letting it Y and then during the winter it made another Y and I didn't get out there and take care of cutting it out. So now I have a nice trunk where it Y's out in 4 directions. Is there anyway that I can get it back to a nice tall Y instead of the 4 large branches?

You're saying it Y'ed really little, then Y'ed again while still short, right? It was more than likely a cutting from flowering region or from one of those side branches that GL makes all up and down the trunk, so that's why it Y'ed so short. I don't know what to tell you to do to make it one straight trunk, maybe Monika will see this and help fix it.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

It sure looks healthy and beautiful Donna!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow, Donna, nice. It probably would be better if it was taller with all the blooms on it. I would think it just has to grow some, or you could cut some of the Y's out if you want a straight trunk, but you will ruin some of the blooms coming. Root the lower Y's and trade or give to a friend.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

I would leave it as is. It is really pretty. I'm jealous of the yr round weather you have to grow plants in.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

That is a real beauty Donna,it is really putting on a show!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Your Golden Lady is very pretty Donna. Instead of cutting the branches away, I would root a cutting below the first Y or, if you have, a bottom sprout. Golden Lady cuttings tend to flower early, even out of the growing region but it is worth a try.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Nite Monika.

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Very nice!!! Mine has not honored me with any blooms yet. I am hoping that once I get them in the ground that it will take off.

Geez, Susie.. sorry about the mud on your poor little toe.. that must have been horrid!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

MzM, it should really take off in your new garden! I solved the mud problem, I put flat stepping stones here and there in the gardens, now I can walk and not get mud on my toes.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Thank you for the nice compliments on my bountiful lady.

What I meant about the Y'ing is...it has its 2 foot trunk and then 4 branches that are going up from that. So instead of a Y with 2 branches, there are four. I know it is my fault for not keeping an eye on it, but during the winter I didn't keep a good eye on it and branched out on me.

Donna
