I need a Free spy/ad ware remover- does anyone have a good one? Please help- this has gone on too long and I'm getting kind of annoyed. :-|
I think the only "safe" website is Daves Garden! *cries*
Spy/AdWare!!!
Ad-aware is a good one. I use it in conjunction with Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free downloads.

Click the above link for Ad-aware.

Here's more: http://www.computercops.biz/postp60832.html
Just FYI, I go to that pcworld link, I get a message that says, "Spybot S&D has blocked the download of 'Avenue A.'" Avenue A is some sort of spyware. I also can't find a link for the free version of Ad-Aware. Can you help me out here?
Kelli, here you go:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=mozclient&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=adaware
On that first hit, you want the plain "Ad Aware" link on the left. That takes you to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Avenue A is a marketing company and is probably attempting to put a tracking cookie on your computer. Most such cookie do not personally identify you, but rather help the sponsors know who visits the on site which they pay to allow them to advertise. A cookie allows them to see unique users rather than a total number of hits. It won't hurt to block it.

Oh, I let it block, don't worry about that. When in doubt, allow nothing in. Whatever Avenue A is, it is everywhere.
Thanks for the Google link.
I just updated that post above - we crossed in the mail, so to speak. :)
Use this to get rid of Ave A ( now Atlas DMT ) and Double Click.

I would also suggest cleaning your cookies and files ( click tools on your browser, click Internet Options and you will see where the cookies and files buttons are. Do this every couple weeks ,more or less is up to you. 'puter will run faster too =). If you do this there will be very little left to worry about. JMO
i spent some money for norton security and i love it it lets you know when some one is trying to put a cookie on your computer and gives you the option to allow or block it, also it lets you know when your computer is being attcked and you can block it, well it blocks it automatically and then gives you the option to allow ( why you would is beyond me unless you were a crazy person LOL) and then you can avoid those sites from then on, also it will give you the address of the computer attcking you and you can turn them in if you want to .
also, go to your start button and go to the search folders. Type in "mywebsearch".
If it's there, delete it. It's a very common one I've dealt with before. Also, while you are there, look for "hotbar", "gator" and "save now" - they are oldies but still around. You don't want them.
The Ad Aware & Spybot are both good programs but sometimes you have to go in and remove things yourself. Just be careful when you do it - you don't want remove something that is necessary to keep your computer functioning.
Karrie,
I did what you said, and found 'findNavigator.com'. I would very much like to get rid of it, but don't know how to delete it. PLEASE help me!
Ursula
Just want to add that I have deleted it a zillion times from 'Tools', 'Internet Options', 'Inicial Page' 'Predeterminated' (my software is in Spanish) and it keeps coming back as the worst weed you can imagine (Bindweed?).

it's kind of dangerous, so be careful.
under the "start" go to "run" then type in regedit
From there you can edit what is running in your registry and should be able to sucessfully delete it, but be careful not to delete anything else.
BEFORE you do that, go to "my computer", then add/remove programs and see if you can get rid of them there. It's much safer that way if you can do it successfully.

Be sure to back up your registry first...
1. After opening REGEDIT
2. Click FILE > EXPORT
3. Down at the bottom, under "export range" go ahead and click next to ALL
4. Enter a name for the file next to "file name"
5. Click SAVE
It defaults to save a backup of your registry in My Documents for easy finding, should you need it.
Karrie, Gardenwife,
thank you so much for your indications. I think I will better call a friend that will interpret your instructions much better than I do. At least, I will be able to tell him where to start.
Thank you both very much!
Ursula, getting a friend that knows what they are doing on there is probably the safest thing to do. Good luck!
Hehe too late GW- we lost EVERYTHING.
LOL!!!!!!!!
Then our modem croaked. Gramps reinstalled windows (we lost everything) and put in a new modem.
Now we are down to 16 bit color!!! How do I change it back to 32 bit??? *cries*.
Right-click your desktop and select PROPERTIES. Click the SETTINGS tab and you should see a choice for color depth. If you don't, you may need to get the driver for your video card still.
Someone on DG told me to go to Ad-aware a while ago and I did and it was my saving grace. They also gave me directions to go back into my computer and delete a lot of things that had crept into my files unbeknownst.
I can't remember who it was that told me, but i will look it up. Haven't had any problems since. :)
