How can I rid odor from upholstery

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

My granddaughter has had the flu. She threw up on my son's couch. He has cleaned it up, but the odor is still present. Anyone know how to get rid of the smell ?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I dont know if this will help but Ive been using Natures Miracle in my steem cleaner on my carpets, as soon as it dries no more smell at all. You can buy it in the big pet stores, I buy it by the gallon since it seems that none of my pets seem to remember to go outside sometimes and of course the 4 yr old.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmmm...can you rub some baking soda into the couch, let it sit a bit then vacuum it out? (Or maybe some "Shower to Shower" deodorant?)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I used to use the natures miracle mentioned above, it works like a dream.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I'd saturate it with Nature's Miracle and let it air dry. The thing with baking soda and other topical treatments is, they don't penetrate into the foam and really get to the source of the odor. Enzyme products like Nature's Miracle actually digest the bacteria that causes the odor.

Thank you everybody. George is going to go to Pet Smart and get some Nature's Miracle. Sounds like something I should have here too - for those hairballs !

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Just a note-if you dont think its getting down far enough, start doing the two step on the furniture to spred it around. I do it with the carpets, havnt tried it on the furniture(yet). This is what I do anyway and it seems to help it spread more.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I have two Doxies in a TINY apartment that seem to think that their front feet only on the paper is acceptable. Of course Rocky lifts his leg too, but thank goodness it's too short to really hit the furniture leg. If it were not for Nature's Miracle I would have to be living out in the yard. It REALLY WORKS!

PS Dravencat, thanks for the tip about using it in my steam cleaner. I never thought of that.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

patischell, it does work great, my sons room was horrible because the rottie thought it was a toilet until i got him housetrained. peeyew.
Ive found the best way to do your carpets is get it wet first, run the steam cleaner with justwater, this way your not using so much of the NM to just get stuff a little wet. Or you can pour water on the area. After the area is saturated then mix a 50/50 mixture of NM and water, put it in the water bucket, where the clean water goes into your cleaner and clean away.
I also try to leave the mixture on for at least 5 minutes before I try to get the exess moisture out of the carpet so I know it is spreading and realy getting that smell.
After trying so many different things and nothing worked, I FINALLY remembered Natures Miracle and bought the gallon jug, $20 but worth it, I dont smell a dang thing in that room anymore, not even dirty socks, LOL.

That's the best spring cleaning tip I ever got!! I keep the Nature's Miracle in a spray bottle and spray it as soon as I see the spot, but I'm sure a good deep cleaning is long past due. I also daily use the "Carpet Fresh" no vacuum foam carpet refresher. It doesn't do anything except neutralize the pet odors, but it sure does make the house smell nice!

yes so much for febreeze. Our A/c is out and we have had 2 fans one burnt up running in front of open doors and windows.
I don't seem to smell it as bad as hubby. I am realizing it is good on furniture but carpet it doesn't last long. Our Doxies are 14 and they do it out of shear spite when we leave.
Vienna will pee and make lines around it in the carpet. You know how if you brush carpet one way it is light and the other it is dark? well she will go all the way around and make lines. It looks like a sun. we realized one day she does that with her nose as there was blood in the lines and the top of her nose was bleeding. I need to take a picture of it one of these days as it is hard to believe that my sweet baby could do such a thing. And I don't thik anyone believes me.
We bought her a large kennel for her and linky to stay in as they get too upset when we go to church or anywhere. My dogs are extremely intellegent like me and my hubby is a little slow. He will have a talk with them before we go some where andleave them out he gets mad when we get home and they have went potty. I tell him he can't possibly think that would work. But he must. I tell him He is the human they are dogs. But truely if he believes this they are smarter than him.
We have this discussion alot. Go figure.
I love my Doxies Vienna sausage and Linky sausage.

Sandy I love the names so much more origonal than Oscar(Myer weiner). I named my doxie Low Ryder, Ryder for short and NO when he gets in the trash before I can tie up the bag.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Have you had them checked at the vet, Sandy? With our females, the vet said to try them on a low dose of estrogen because it helps incontinence. Most dogs (*most*) don't just go out of spite. Once they've gone in a spot, it definitely takes more than Febreeze to get rid of the smell, especially to the point where the dogs won't be attracted to the area again. Why don't you post on the pet forum about this - folks there might be able to help.

Okay, okay! What is this stuff called Natures Miracle. I have never heard of it but it difinately sounds like something I would like to get my hands on. Where do you get it?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

it is not really spite why she does that little design in the carpet. the vet said she is telling us that she is upset when we leave. That is why the kennel it keeps her from being to upset with us.
yes she was checked. She has kidney problems and she has always ate a good pet food since we got her. go figure she got kidney problems anyway. she is on prescription science diet kd now-wow the price-18.00 for 10 lbs. and even prescription biscuits. shes worth it.she can't have a food with high protien. also he said because she was spayed some dogs lose the ability to hold their urine. the muscle is weak. she was peeing on me at night in her sleep and noy even waking up but boy i did. yuck. but she couldn.t help it. she is doing alot better now. she is my baby. i don't want to imagine life with out her. boy the love i have for my girl, never known anything like it since my kitty. I could cry forever just thinking about it. around 5 years ago the did an exray of her back and said she was full of cancer. i saw the exray. the vet said the prognosis was bad. we laid hands on her and I know god healed her because she should not be here now. also linky ruptured 5 discs in his back and neck around 7 years ago he could not walk at all. the vet put him on prednisone and something for pain. all he did was yelp. broke or hearts. we would carry him everywher. outside to the couch to bed. we would lay on the floor with him and cry and pray for his healing. except for arthritis in his little front knees he is great. you can't tell he was ever like that. we thought we would have to build my a cart to pull his back legs around. but he still has a prance in his walk.
I love my babies! and so does Jesus. I thank him they are still here and pray for many more years.

Sandy -- That's wonderful about the answers to prayer.

Ask your vet about putting your dog on a low dose of estrogen. That peeing while relaxed/sleeping is just the kind of thing my vet was talking about. With our dogs, it was one pill a day for five days, and then 1 pill a week after that. He said he's seen some incredible turn-arounds with it. :)

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Yanno, that peeing while relaxing/sleeping/sneezing is also an old age problem....LOL (But they quit giving estrogen.)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

tombstonejan, I am glad you asked. I was reading these comments and knew I was out of the loop.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Honeygirl, let us know how it works for you.

Dravencat - My son was going to go to Pet Smart and buy some Nature's Miracle. He lives in Michigan, so when I hear from him I'll let you know. He is almost 40 years old, and a new parent, so he is having so much fun. I always get a chuckle when he writes me with this kind of a problem - Mom will know what to do ! And I do - I ask you guys !
