I looked up my USDA Zone on the map on this website, but I need to know how to determine if I'm in a or b. I live in Lacey, Washington, which is very near Olympia, our state's capital... If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. :)
Am I in zone 8a or 8b??
Here is a good map from the United States National Arboretum.
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html
The minimum temp for 8a is 10-15 degrees F.
The minimum temp for 8b is 15-20.
I know there are sites where you can enter your zip code and they will give back your hardiness zone.
I think you are 8a, but they are so close I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm zone 5b and plant zone 6 plants all of the time and seem to do ok - I just mulch well in the fall.
I remember seeing a site where you could punch in your zip code - If I find it for you, I'll post it for you.

Thanks! I checked the map and I think you're right, Karrie. I think I'm in 8a. I've been wondering that for awhile, so now it will be nice to add that to my profile. :)
eje, I just vitited San Francisco last weekend. What a beautiful city! I hope to return again soon when I can stay longer.

Dana,
The whole USDA zone thing ignores so many factors, it's kind of hard to take too seriously, except as a very general rule about how much cold certain plants can take. Especially the a versus b type stuff. My parents have now retired to Phoenix, Arizona. It's funny, because the minimum temperatures here and in Phoenix, AZ are around freezing, so we are in the same zone. However, our climates are nothing alike! Seasonal rainfall, humidity, high temperatures, etc. All completely different; but, we are in the same USDA hardiness zone!
I'm glad to hear you had a nice time in San Francisco! My wife and I have lived here for about 10 years, and really enjoy it. We have friends near Olympia and hope to get up to visit them in WA some time in the next year or so.
