Ceder-apple gall rust

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

When schlepping in the yard yesterday I didn't notice anything strange. We had a soft rain this morning. After it stopped I wandered outside...oh my gosh!!! ALL of my ceder trees were covered in orange, jello looking stuff! I'm thinking The Twilight Zone here. Checked at the neighbor's and my son's...same thing.

I made a call to the Dept. of Forestry and was told it was ceder-apple gall rust. It's an alternate host disease. It can be found on ceder (it's favorite),hawthorn, juniper and crabapple. Can't do anything to get rid of it other then cut down the trees. It rarely does any real harm to the host and will dry up after a few days of sun. It sure does look nasty though!

I have a yard full of cedars and mine are covered in it, too. It causes no problems for us b/c we don't have apple trees. It does look very strange, doesn't it?? A few years ago when I first noticed it, it scared me so bad I screamed for my DH to come look. I thought it was a booger of some sort!
