Hybiscus

Royal Oak, MI(Zone 5b)

Should I cut back my Hybiscus or leave old stems? I live in zone 5.

You might as well cut them back. Nothing will grow on the old stems. Some people leave them so they can see where the plant is and until it starts growing.

I am such a goof ball, I meant Hydrangeas.

I'm glad someone else does this. I'm sure guilty. Can't help with the hydrangeas though. Sorry.

I only have one hydrangea bush and I usually cut it back to 18" to 2 ft. I have to constantly pull up new starts around it because it likes to crowd out my shade garden. My neighbor cuts it off to the ground in spring and it seems to do well too! So, pick? Also, a big welcome to DG. Please introduce yourself in the Welcome Mat forum. Everyone would love to 'meet' you!!

I think Hydrangeas prefer pruning after they bloom.

When you get a few of those babies that need to be pulled out, please let me know and I'll send postage for them.

How about I bring some to the RU? One thing I didn't think of!!

Brugie, I planted six last year. 3 Annabells and 3 regular?. The ones that I call regular will turn either pink or blue depending on the soil. When I purchased them in the spring they were pink, however, my soil must be acid cause as the summer went on the blooms became blue. Really beautiful. The annabells are white and they are supposed to be very hardy. I will watch them and see what happens re: babies. If they have them sure I would send them to you. Being in zone 5 we still have a few more weeks before it really warms up. One day cool the next in the 50/low 60.

I know what you mean about the weather. Ice in the birdbath two or three morning straight tells me it isn't quite time for spring yet. Thanks so much. I'll be delighted to get a few hydrangeas. One more month till Roundup. Gosh, I have so much to do.
