Here is a cheap small bench at Linens and Things:

If you are not picky about what it looks like, a good utility cart would work. This one has a lipped edge that would catch any soil.

Hey, got one last week at Big Lots in Vero for 19.99. It's pine and can be stained or painted.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Good luck, the big lots we have locally only seems to sell the small statues and ornaments to decorate your garden. I have never seen anything REALLY useful there..well, okay, the small greenhouses were sure useful.

Melbourne, FL(Zone 9a)

am headin to our Big Lots tomorrow to check to see if they have the bench- if not may drive to vero- have heard that port st john big lots has TONS of garden stuff too--
THANKS AGAIN for help--

My DH bought me one last year that is heavy duty molded plastic. Some assembly required (snapping pieces together). It has a workbench level shelf, a shelf at the bottom, and a narrower shelf above the workbench that holds pots, etc. The workbench has a grid on one side that you can put your pots you're working on, and the lower shelf has a bin that the "fallout" dirt, etc. falls into. On the other side of the lower shelf you can put a couple of bags of soil, fertilizer, etc.

It's very sturdy, holds a lot of weight. It also has slots on the sides for hanging small tools and storing longer handled ones. It also is on wheels. It's pretty cool!

I'm sure he got it at Walmart, Lowe's, or Home Depot, etc. locally. I don't know if they have it, or something similar, this year. But I thought you might try one of these if you have them near you.

swpt15---Big Lots have one small potting bench $19.99-pine wood---33' wide,20" deep ,37" high. I stained mine with (2) coats of Polyurethane ( Honey Pine) to protect against elements. *** Also starting Sunday 3/28/04 Big Lots have a larger potting bench-$ 39.99- 55" wide,20" deep,42" high. I am sure your Big Lots should have this, as our store is very small and they have these products.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

JUDITH, This is like mine and I got it at K-Mart. I like the fact that it has wheels and I can move it around (and it was cheap)

Judith, I got 2 similar to what you are describing, only the base is enclosed and has shelves inside. I got it at WalMart last fall when they had a few on clearance for $20.00. They really are great, and just the right height.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Menards (similar to Home Depot) had one yesterday for $49.99
made out of 2 X 4's, very sturdy and 6 feet long! Shelf underneath but no riser on the top. But it is really a workbench.

If you live in New England, the Christmas Tree Shop has great gardening stuff. Furniture, tools, pots, etc. Last year my hubby bought me a plastic rollaround potting bench which has a fold-out table, sink! and faucet that hook up to the garden hose, next to a dry basin, door-enclosed shelves underneath and a long handled tool rack on the back, one slot of which takes my costco beach umbrella. I look like a hot dog stand, but it works for me! All this joy for $69.00. Had to be assembled, but I had my son, the mechanically inclined, for that. can't find the web address, it is a Backyard Gear product from Today's Plastics. They make that cute kneeler/bench you see everywhere.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

where'd you get yours, gardenmart?
i googled for backyard gear stuff, and the only gardening type thing i could find was that little kneeler bench thing.. and that's just.. no.. not what i want
lol
i, too, am looking for a nice planting bench type thing

I have the Rubbermaid molded vinyl/rubber one too. I think they are down to about $79.95 by now. He paid over a hundred dollars for it about the second year they were on the market around here. I love it. My hubby got it for me about 3 years ago. Beside it I have an old(I mean my parents brought it here to MO from IL in '47 and it was old then)enamel steel top table. My father built at least 2 wooden frames for it while he was living. Jack made a metal pipe frame for it a couple years ago. It's the same height of the Rubbermaid bench so it is really convenient. I do a LOT of work on those 2 in the growing seasons.

swpt15---your plants and accessories are beautiful. Boy, really large porch---all looks very cozy and inviting. Plant stands are very interesting. Good luck on obtaining your potting bench Wednesday---(bobbi) Marlene

Love the crane! Love the porch! sigh. I got my bench from the Christmas tree Shop which is a regional store here in New england. Tried for over an hour on-line to find the company that makes them. No luck. They make a very popular barbeque bench that is very similar, and lots of places had that. I tossed the picture that may have had the website on it, and the instruction page doesn't have anything on there except pictures and steps to assemble. Sorry. If I find out anything new, I will post it here. My daughter has a girlfriend who works at this place and can maybe find out where they bought it from. This will take a couple of days, since I have to communicate through my daughter.

I love your place! Just wanted to say we have a pair of Sand Hill Cranes at our cottage that come back every year. When the ducks and geese, and swan parade their babies around the lake, the Cranes walk theirs down the road,
to show them off. They nest at the end of the lake, but must not swim. They only seem to have one or two babies, but are very protective. One came in our yard once and the parents kept flying overhead in a panic trying to get him back with them!Good Parents(both mama&daddy)
Used to always be in Venice ,Fla. this time of the year, but M.I.L that lived there, now lives with us in Mi.I love Fla!

ladyblue62-- boy i sure hope we can get to see the babies- i read they only have one- maybe two - their nests look like a bunch of grass thrown down on edge of marsh-- just put in sandhill crane in search engine and some awesome pics come up of them-- their nesting places, babies- etc--
the mom was here this morning- she has a hurt leg-- has been hurt since she first came -- she limps-- guess dad is on the nest-- i just love those birds- they simply appear out of nowhere and u turn around and they are standing right next to ya- it is sooo awesome--
