Anyone have real life stories of remarkable events?

Things you actually saw, experienced?

I'll start with mine.

It is on my mind because of the amazing wind we had today (56 mph gusts - saw some things fly - and I don't live in tornado alley).

Last summer, at the lake house on Memorial Weekend, was beautiful. But it is on Lake Roosevelt (which is actually the mighty Columbia River) and we get occasional storms out of nowhere. It is especially scary when you are out on the boat.

Fortunately, we were all back from our daily fishing and tanning and getting ready to BBQ (whole family was there).

This storm came out of nowhere. I have never seen anything like it. The winds were weird. We were under the back covered patio, and the rain itself looked like a wall of water. Everyone there was kind of freaked. We adults did the head counts on the kids, but even that wasn't enough, because the fearless toddlers were out saying "cooooooool" and trying to "round and round" from front door to back patio door.

We were facing the lake/river and couldn't even see it the rain was so thick.

It lasted about 3 minutes and it was nice again.

I told our girls to never forget it, so they could share that with their grandchildren. It was a once in a lifetime (if you are lucky and get to get scared that way) experience.

I know I will never forget that day, and the feeling of "where are my kids" but also the euphoria of "wow" while you are standing there looking at it happen. I do remember one thing very vividly - I have never felt "fresher, cleaner " air in my life.

A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO IN THE SUMMER WE WERE IN THE FRONT YARD BY OUR BIG BRADFORD PEAR TREE. I WAS GRILLING AND OUR GIRLS WERE RAKING UP GRASS THAT HAD JUST BEEN MOWED. THEY HAD 4 LARGE PILES. WE WERE ABOUT 250 FT FROM OUR DIRT RD. AND WE SAW ONE OF THOSE SAND TWISTERS. YOU KNOW WHEN THE DIRT SWIRLS ROUND AND ROUND BUT IS NOTHING MAJOR. THE SUN WAS SHINNING. ALL OF A SUNDEN THE FUNNEL GREW AND CAME ACROSS OUR YARD HEADING STRAIGHT FOR US. AS IT PASSED US IT FILLED THE CLOSE GRILL WITH THE GRASS THE KIDS HAD RAKED AND THROWED THE REST EVERYWHERE. IT WAS A FAIRLY SATRONG WIND ABOUT 25 MILES PER HR AND ONLY LASTED FOR A MINUTE OR LESS BUT IT WAS THE WEIRDEST THING I HAD SEEN MUST LESS SAT THRU.

Wow - that would be freaky. I think what we call those here are "dust devils" - you see them alot out on the plains. We rarely have twisters here (but have been known to).
