NEED RAIN!!!!!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

It is VERY dry this year. Just saw weatherman and he mentioned that Mar. is typically our wettest month in GA., BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE DRIEST. We are currently over 5 in. below normal so far this yr. and it's only mid March!!! How about where you live? How's rainfall and what will you do to compensate for no rain??? I 've already been watering my new plants that I recently set out. I have NEVER used a hose this early before!!!! For those of us who are dry- Let's all pray for rain!!!!!! Hope to hear from lots of folks!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We're still in the winter, and it's been drizzling or spitting snowflakes here all day, on top of what snow is left. :S We've been dry before, though, and I can relate to your frustration. Praying the clouds head your way for some nice all-day soakers.

Thank you very much, gardenwife. We might get a few sprinkles Sun. as per weatherman but of course only THE RAINMAKER really knows!!! Hope Spring comes to you really soon :)

Up until last year, we had a drought for about 5 years. It was awful. We are on well too! DH dug a pond and ran water lines just so I could water my flowers. He did this about 3 years ago and then just made the pond bigger this year. Droughts are awful and scary. I hope you get rain soon!

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

LOL Well I for one am praying some of our rain will head your way!!! I hope it gets to you really soon!!

It's been dry here, too. We haven't gotten an inch of rain yet this month ... *sigh* I had to drag the hose around the yard today, not a good sign.

In the past few years I've adjusted to a dry period in the spring, but it usually happens in May. I'm wondering if we are getting our dry time early this year, or if it's gonna last that long, or what.

We don't handle drought well here ....

This looks like it is going to be our fifth droughth year. Practically no rain so far in Mar, and very little in Feb. I talked to a well driller a couple of days ago. He came looked at my location and witched for water. Hopes he can get water between 200 and 300 feet and so do I. Terribly expensive, if he hits good enough water by 200 feet will cost me more than $6000.00. But I guess I have to doit. Currently I am the highest garden on the community well, and also the largest, and since the well is to be used for domestic purposes I am exceeding my quota. The well driller will hopefully come next week to begin. Got my loan okayed. Wish me luck. Donna

Dear Rutholive, I am so very sorry to hear of your troubles. Kinda makes mine look puny. I too, know the expense of well drilling. We had to do it a few yrs. ago. My DH and I fuss constantly in the summer about me using so much water. I sorta sneak and water when he is at work. Only by God's grace do we still have water. Ruth, I will pray that they find water and not have to drill so deep. I am so sorry you have to get a loan to do it, though. I will also pray that your area gets rain soon.

It looks like it's going to be a drought year here. The average rainfall for a year is 16 inches. (A rain year goes from July to June, since we only get rain in the winter half of the year.) It is misleading to say that the average is 16 inches, since we get the "average" amount maybe one in 10 years and the range I've seen in 16 years varied from 4 to 40 inches. I'm not sure how much we've got this rain year but I think it's around 6 inches and we're running out of time for this year. However, in the grand scheme of things, 6 inches is pretty normal. The rainfall has been capricious here for ages and long ago they put in an aqueduct system and water isn't all that expensive.

*sigh* We are now 7" behind. Last year it was like a monsoon and everyone complained, but I knew we'd miss it once it was gone. I only watered my garden twice all year last season. Yup, twice. It's usual for us to have to water once a week or so in August when it's crazy hot. But for me to have already had to water twice this MONTH and it's MARCH! is not good at all. I have a feeling a lot of stuff is going to die this year (annuals and such). I work and just can't water more than once or twice a week...

Well, here's my 2 cents worth from sunny NW Florida:

Here it's feast or famine. We're really hurting for water rain-wise in March. And April is typically a dry month, so it doesn't look promising.

I fought being at the mercy of the elements for 50 years in GA. When we moved to FL, although we were having rain every day that summer (haven't since in 12 years), I was determined to have a sprinkler system installed, as I was no longer physically able to drag a hose around for dry periods. Best $2000 I ever spent!

Of course it only waters the front part of our yard, and I would love to extend my garden a bit into the back wooded area. Never felt we had the $$ to add on to the system.

The year I had it installed, my neighbors thought I was crazy, with all the rain! I guess that's why I got a good price on it! But I have to admit to chuckling a bit when they're getting older like we are and are still having to drag a hose around.

At this point, you're probably thinking, "Oh shut up for heaven's sake! You don't have water problems!" Well it does cost a lot for the city water that we use.

And several weeks ago, we had a dry lightning storm that apparently hit our sprinkler control system. Now that it's so dry, we can't find anyone to replace the control box. Too busy installing new systems for everybody else now in the dry season!

My DH finally found a compatible box online that he has ordered. Meanwhile, my plants that are used to having water are gasping. Shallower roots I suppose, although we don't water regularly on a schedule, just run it manually when it gets really dry.

But when the heavy rains do come, we've worked out a good drain system for almost all of the yard. But there is a garden walkway strip just in front of my front door that puddles badly, and grass planted there won't stand being underwater. It's too hot here to pave it & paint it green. Just reflects more heat.

Can't raise the area with more dirt, as we're on the downhill slope, and water would then puddle in my living room. Don't you just love cement slab construction???

Now am looking for a low grass or ground cover for this zone that will stand being underwater for a few days/weeks at a time. If it stayed wet all the time, I'd just make it a pond/waterway, and furnish canoes and paddles for garden visitors!

Ah well! If gardening were easy, everyone would do it. I suppose God wants us to work for it, so we value it more. Something about Adam & Eve, and an apple, as I recall.

Pray we all get water soon that need it, and snowless days for you in lower temp zones.

Judith
