NAME THAT BRUG!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Which brug are you most looking forward to a repeat performance in your yard??

And if you are a newbie, which brug has caught your fancy and you are dying to see its bloom up close and personal?

For me it is my Creamsickle. I was so infatuated with the changing color of its huge blooms!

Kell I am with you on that, Creamsickle was my favorite this year.

Great pictures you two. I don't know how you do it. I had summer bloom and fall bloom and got very little color from mine either time.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Did you find it did better in sun for a little shade?I am trying to figure out where to put mine.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Doc mine was in full sun but it was shaded with all the other taller brugs around it. I had to crawl under them to get to see the blooms on it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

There are several that I love to see in my yard/garden, but I think the one I'm most anxious to see bloom again so I'll know whether or not to release it would be ForeverMorr. This is a fall picture and the plant is pretty beat up, but it just kept on blooming.

Forevermorr is a real beauty Shirley.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

WOW kell. Thats a real beauty! I was already very satisfied with the size and shape of the white flowers.
Shirley, I am looking really forward to see pictures of ForeverMorr this summer. She was already a beauty last fall.

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

Kell, your Creamsicle is such a beauty!! Certainly on my wish list.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

I want to see those repeat too. I can't wait till you release that one Shirley! I can't wait for Susanne to get started again, hopefully when she has her baby she will take off again!

Now I really cannot wait for blooms; my creamsicle did not bloom last year, but will this year and I cannot wait. I like Rosemond too.

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

There are sooooo many beautiful brugs out there,Kell. I wish I could have them ALL!
BUT MY ALL TIME FAVORITE has to be BUTTERFLY. Because she never fails to give outstanding flushes here in the north. Her fragrance is to-die-for and she appears to be good for parenting. (Not that I know much about that)...LOL

I agree with you Kell. My Creamsickle bloomed all summer. I also loved
Temple Godess and solid Gold. They both just kept on blooming. My creamsickle just put on some new buds.

Hi Patricia! I hope your new house is going well! I bet your new neighbors are going to get a great tropical show this year.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Kell: That's gorgeous! I don't have a favorite as I've never seen a bloom in person :) and, what I have that's loaded with buds, turns out not to be a Dr. Seuss after all. On that order there were three different varieties/cultivars, and the labels must've gotten mixed up. Anyway, I after pouring over pictures of foliage last night, think it will be a Frosty Pink...

Anyway, thanks for the picture! Gretchen

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I'm still enough of a newbie that I want blooms, any & all blooms! I was so thrilled last summer to have several brugs blooming at the same time. The ones that I am especially looking forward to are:
Creamsickle (new cutting from last fall - thanks again Shirley!)
Butterfly (ditto - thanks Shirley)
Pink Beauty (ditto - thanks Shirley)
Antique Lace (ditto - thanks David)
Kristi's White - a white one that I got from Datdog several years ago, it blooms & blooms & blooms. The flowers last about a week in the summer, but last FOREVER in the winter. I tried to keep track of the last one to open. It lasted OVER a month, & didn't start looking bad until the end.
All of my one year old seedlings that didn't have time to bloom last fall. Lots of them had Y's, but only one had a chance to bloom before I had to bring them inside.
And, of course, all of the new seedlings that are tiny babies now. I'm really going to push the fertilizer this year and try to get blooms early, like Tracey does!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Frosty is one many of us had first or had early! It is a great one to start with for iit is so floriferous and easy. I have been known to have a few myself! LOL.

Newbie answer:

I've seen some pictures on the ABADS gallery and elsewhere that blow my mind, varieties that look like they are out of a science fiction book. I don't think they are available in the US, most of 'em.

But since joining this board, I'm seeing a lot of varieties I've never heard of that ARE here in the US! I have to hold back from begging for cuttings just about every time someone posts a picture! That Creamsickle, for example. And Butterfly, I've heard so many good things about. And one I can't remember the name, it was posted recently, this stunning dark coral/salmon color. I could go on and on.

Closer to home, I've got Sanguineas started from seed, about a foot & a half tall now. I can't WAIT to see those bloom! If they get that far! (so far so good, but my fingers are cramping from keeping them crossed this long!)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hermitess, which sangs do you have? I love sangs!

Ronna, I would love to know how many of us are going to be doing Tracey's force feed method of brug growing! LOL! And boy, Brugie set you up well!

edited to give Hermitess a better view of me! I am so sorry!

I am so happy to see some of the newbies to brugs having so much fun. I have loved all of them in one way or another. I have Isabella and she is one of my favorites because she blooms for me non-stop from spring until winter. I don't care if she is common because she continuously makes the garden lovely.

Cambria, CA

ROTFL @ Kell!! I am assuming that's a typo! Now I have sprayed coffee all over my monitor, 'scuse me while I find a paper towel... hee hee hee :))

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OH MY!!!! OH MY!!! I am so sorry! I am laughing too hard also!

Schriever, LA(Zone 9a)

Oh Kell Creamsickle is BEAUTIFUL. Please tell me where I can find one because I absolutely have to have one now. I ordered my first 2 brugs from Top Tropicals and they just arrived last week, but I don't think they have Creamsickle.

Cambria, CA

Kell! :))

OK to answer your question about what variety of Sanguinea, all I know at this point is "red." I think I got the seeds at banana-tree, but it was a while back and right now all that info is on my recently dead computer at home. (I'm at work now, and using the laptop at home until I get to work on the deceased desktop)

Of course, I can't be 100% certain WHAT I've got until I see some flowers! (talk about suspense!) But in the meanwhile, here's a pic of one from a couple weeks ago...

Best of luck, Hermitees on growing your Sanguinea. I wish i could grow them here.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

As a newbie I'd have to say Rosamond has caught my eye the most thus far. Although now that I know Sanguinea come in red I just may have to switch favorites. :-)
Is there a purple or lavender Brug?

RikerBear

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

We all wish there was. There is a Flava, I believe, that has lavender color, but not deep. Someone who knows, better drop by and tell you more about it. Maybe I was dreaming anyway.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

gee Hermitess, those look like regular brug leaves to me. But do not depend on my say so. I have only had about 12 different kinds of sangs so there are many I have never seen. My leaves aways have points, some more than others and are furry! Maybe you have something better!

Miss Lizzy and Jeanne are the sang experts, I bet they will come by and let us know what they think!

If you have sang weather, I have some very special seeds I will share.

Here is one of my baby sangs.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

What is Sang weather? Florida, california type weather? Z9,10,11

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

The cooler the better. Liz and Jeanne in Vancouver have great luck with them.

Cambria, CA

Thanks for the photo, that leaf does not look quite the same does it... who knows what the heck I've got here! Watch them turn out generical white or something. Oh well :)

I had no idea there were so many kinds of sanguineas! And here I'm all hot stuff coz I'm growing "red ones" hehe

As for weather... I think we have sang weather here(?) it rarely gets to frost temp in winter, and rarely breaks 80 in summer.

(Although, it's already been hot this spring, very unusual for this time of year. I think the earth is experiencing climate changes, but that's another story.)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hot is not the word for it. I have been melting. Sangs like the cool nights of the East Bay. 80's they probably can survive if not all the time. Is it cool there at night?

Cambria, CA

East Bay, as in, north of me? If so (howdy neighbor!) we have just about the same weather, in general. But it tends to be a little cooler in my spot here under the eucalyptus trees - not much direct sunlight.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

well then your sangs should flourish! How far are you away from me? Cambria, rings a bell. Is that down by Hearst Castle?

Cambria, CA

Hearst Castle's about 15 minutes north. You might have heard Cambria in the news around Christmas because we had an earthquake (6.5) and that is totally weird for here. Our other claim to fame is that they filmed Arachniphobia here (*shudder*)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Is there a cowboy restaurant there that has huge steaks?

Cambria, CA

I don't think so.. I'm not entirely familiar w/the restaurants here (they be tooooo fancy & expensive for the likes of me!) but I haven't seen anything cowboy-themed. That sounds more like something you'd find in Paso Robles or Templeton or Atascadero, which are all east of us.

Ashton, IL(Zone 5a)

Newbie answer (ok really it's a question):

Maybe someone here can "name that brug" for me. I want one that is shaped like Creamsickle, not Pink Favorite. I'm not sure how you describe that bloom shape... I like tendrils, and it should be very fragrant. Pink, rose, peach or white, not yellow orange or gold. And one that would tend to grow taller before flowering.

So which one(s) would fit that description?

Eileen

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I am really looking forward to this summer and blooms from the new varieties that I've been tending over the winter. I have a small Creamsickle, several Rosamonds, Butterfly, Arborea, Charles Grimaldi, Kell's Girly Girl, the new Ambrosia, and SOOO many more (thank you all for your contributions). Then there are the ones from last year that did not bloom, Snowbanks, and many seedlings. My gh is so full, I can hardly get in there.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Shaped like Creamsickle...wow. I'm thinking something along the lines of Rosamond or Pink Favorite. They have long tendrils and the recurve in the bloom. If you click on Kell's name and then look at some of her threads, she had lots of pictures of Rosamond that were gorgeous.
