dry shade

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

I have such a problem with dry shade, I don't know what to plant in this area. We live on a ravine lot and at the back of the yard it's the worst as there are a lot of very mature tree's. Grass won't grow there at all I'm trying ground cover but that hasn't been to exciting yet maybe this summer might be better for that. A friend gave me some grasses that are invasive and hard to get rid of so maybe with any luck!!!! Sure would appreciate some ideas!

Here's a good list

I love Bishops Weed for dry shade. Water well until established then water only rarely as if it gets too much water it can be invasive. Mine always does pretty well here in Colorado and I never water it and that is with less than 15" rainfall each year and a drought to boot.

it says here that it needs consistently moist soil but then that is when it becomes invasive. For a dry spot it should stay under control. As I said before, I NEVER water mine and it does great and stays under control.

Mobi, that is funny. I cannot get most of the so-called weeds and ground covers to grow here. It took years for Periwinkle to finally get a good start in our yard. Our best ground covers seem to be Henbit and Gill Over the Ground.

Thanks Poppysue what a list, I'll print it off to check out what zone and what they look like!!!!
MOBI I like the bishop weed as well it's got nice colour combinations, thank you

LEAFLADY I've started some periwinkle but it's not doing so well also I've tried bugleweed I couldn't get rid of it at my other place and can't get it to move here, I may live to regret these words.
Thanks ladies I sure do appreciate your help.

Hi, my purple and the white with blue flag violets and Bishop's Weed do well in the dry shade, as do the Kwanzo daylilies and lily of the valley.

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

Thanks MarciaGeiger I love violets I'll try them as well as there's a lot of area to cover. You know I do have a couple of daylilies back there and they did seem quit happy, now that you mention them

thanks again Linda

Better Homes & Garden's March issue happened to have an article on Dry Shade and gave a review of a lovely garden a couple have in Delaware. I just read it last night. They listed: Virginia Bluebells, Hellebores, Ferns, Woodland Phlox, Epidmediums, Hosta and hardy Begonia.
