okay how we did this.
i plan to use clear plastic cups. that way the kids can see the roots and easier to see all the things going in in this cup.
now what we did was let the kids if they had money buy their own seeds from where ever and told them when they had to have it here.
alot of them since we have computers wanted to buy off ebay (which was a learning expierence in its own right).
so we did. the ones who couldnt afford it i made up some differences and asked here for donations.
okay once we got all the seeds since it was around christmas time we let the kids (35 kids as only one class got to do this so far)plant them and take them home with the parents signing a paper as to not to help. if it dies it dies. learning here.
i recommend this project for other teachers as it is a learning expierence.
first the buying part of it. the spending of money.
second the growing part (science here)
the last part is learning not everything turns out the way you want it to. seeds dont always germinate.
i do have a few pics but rather wait till you can see all of the pics step by step.
i labled each cup with name class and plant type.
we are planning to put them all under different lighting conditions. (shade window light just the class light things like this.)
so here goes we have started.
oh by the way poke holes in bottom of cups before putting dirt and seeds in. hehe
pics below
school project started
the first pic is of containers we got from our local shipping meat comapany. they make great water catchers. now to wait on mother nature.
Well shoot! Where are all the smiling little faces!
I think your idea may really catch on!
When I told a teacher friend of mine about this, she was tickled. She wants to know the name of your school that is doing this & also the age range of the kids. Were there any kind of safety limitations your school put on you regarding the seed types? I told her you were gonna post pics & she said that maybe you can post a big group picture in front of the school with the kids holding their seedlings. :)
Fun idea.
this is being done with 6th graders. the ages range between 10-13 depending on birthdays. there are policies here that you have to have the parents permission to take pics. the only pics are done by professionals with out permission. something a few years ago happened and our policies have really gotten tight. i was telling a friend how everything unless done state wide has to be approved.
the only limitations we had for the seeds are that they are allowed here in the state and absolutly no kudzu or invasive species. also we couldnt have anything that even might cause skin irritaions like nettles or things like that. the biggest thing is none were treated with any kind of chemicals like big nurseries do. if it looks like any kind of drug its a no no for instance a Merrimia vine looks like a drug plant. no fruits as a saftey thing just incase someone decided to eat it while no one was looking.
we chose to do this with older kids for the following reason:
the dont eat the seeds. ( had a few younger ones eat the lima beans)
as far as the name of the school i need to ask if i can post it.
we are haveing a few school staff problems at the moment and i dont want to add fuel to the fire .
