Who would I call to find out about getting someone to fix or repair this older lady's roof? I mean I know there are community groups that do this sort of thing but who would ya call?
I know there are groups that go around and paint and fix and repair older folks houses and stuff, but I don't have a clue as to who to contact.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction??
This lady is in dire need of a new roof on her house. I feel soo sorry for her. She is my Mothers next door neighbor and she is at least in her late 80's. Her roof leaks like crazy when it rains and she has to go around putting buckets and pans to catch the water.
Far as we know she doesn't have any family that lives in the state that could help her.
My hands are tied and I simply can't do it eaither. Yet this lady doesn't need to spend her remaining years having to catch rain water inside her house.
No one at the court house seems to know anyone that can help...so that was a dead end call.
Anyone know who else I could call?
Do you know who I'd call...
You might try contacting local roofing companies and see if they've ever worked in conjunction with charities on this type of work. Also, the Chamber of Commerce might have ideas, as might any crisis and information center you might have.
Oh, and maybe contact this agency? http://www.cfrdc.org/sthncres.htm
Do you have a Community Action Program there? I know the one here will help to some extent with things like that .
Do you have a "Habitat for Humanity" program there?
O gosh, all these are such good ideas! Thank you all so much for your help.
I'll do some calling around tomorrow since I know what to ask for and look for in the phone book and all.
Again Thanks soo much.
I'm hoping to do this where she wont know who done it, kinda like a secert santa helper thing.
She is so deserving of this, I just hope I can contact the right place and person.
Wish me luck.
Here we have an agency called the Senior Services Division of the state government. They can link people in the need with others who will help. Also some churches will do things like that as a humanity project.
Hugs for you for trying to find someone to do it for her. I will pray that you find her some help.
Here the city has senior help services. In our utility bill there is always a list of numbers to call for senior who need help with their homes.
I second Habitat for Humanity. In fact, weren't it Jimmy Carter the former governor of your great state that started the organization?
I e/mailed a couple of people and found a couple of phone numbers on GW's link. Plus now I know what the word is "Habbitat for Humanity" and that gives me alot to search.
This lady has lived in my Mothers neighbor hood ever since I was a kid. She use to bake cookies and give them to us for taking her mail up to the door(it saved her a trip)
She was always such a sweet lady too. When I first started learning to cut grass for money I'd cut her's every week. She'd always try to pay me, but all I ever took was a cookie and a glass of water to cool off with :)
I guess this is why I am really wanting to do this for her. I kinda feel like I owe it to her ya know what I mean?
Good for you Molly, also good ideas; here we have Retired Senior volunteer Program ( where seniors help others-maybe there is a senior roofer there with contacts, many of the local businesses have employee groups that help out on volunteer basis: good luck to you.
Another option that is often used around here is the local Ministrial Alliance. So often many churches have committees that fund this kind of activity. I have two teenagers and they go every summer around to different states and paint and repair elderly homes. It is such a shame that these people have worked hard all their lives and have to finish living their lives in homes unfit for animals. I wish I lived closer to her because she sounds like a jewel. Please contact some churches and see if they have the "remoldel--rebuild--repair" program. That is what the program in called here. We have a group of Catholic men that do stuff like that so I know there will be men in that area capable of helping this wonderful lady. Bless her for wanting to stay there in her home. Tracy
Sometimes local high schools or tech schools will take on a project like that for their students to learn from also. And they usually want a job "from start to finish" so they learn all that is involved and the "how to's".
Just another option. You could at least make a phone call.
Hoping all works out well!
I used to work for Community Action, they have programs specifically for the elderly that would put a roof on.
I see someone suggested them already, that would be my first call. :-)
Been out running errands all day so I'm hoping to make a few phone calls before the kids get home.
(Almost impossible to talk on the phone when the kids are here LOL)
Thanks ya'll
I'll report back if I have any good news.
Molly.
It is great of you to do this for the elderly lady. There needs to be more concerns about other people's problems.
That's a great idea about contacting a vocational school.
It's a good thing you want to do, Mollybee. Just to set the record straight, Jimmy Carter didn't start Habitat for Humanity, I believe that was a man named Millard Fuller. Jimmy Carter is certainly the group's most famous volunteer. Not many people had heard of it before he got involved, and now nearly everyone knows about it.
mollybee: try contacting the Georgia Dept. of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services at Two Peachtree St., NW, Suite 9-385, Atlanta, GA 30303.
Phone is 404-657-5258. They might be able to give you an answer on help for this lady.
Thanks ya'll.
First phone call was a bust...but she did give me another number to call. I called the number and the lady said "that is what we do here" I said O good, she said the lady I needed to speak with about getting it set up was gone for the day so I left my name and number.
If she don't call me back by 10-11:00 I'm gonna try calling her back. I'll keep calling until I get a answer!
Thanks again ya'll. I feel so good about this :D
Mollybee, this is a very nice thing you are doing. Every elderly person should have such a guardian angel.
:) Thanks Kathy.
MollyBee...this OLD LADY is proud of you. If I was ever in need I would like you in my corner!! Jo
LOL Jo, I'd be in your corner each and every time you needed me and that's a promise :)
Molly,
Just found this thread and was wondering how things turned out?
Jody
Mollybee, what an angel you are. I myself would do the same thing. I just think if it was my mother, I sure would want someone to help her. God bless you.
I saw in another thread that MollyBee was scheduled for repeat back surgery 3-17-05. She hasn't been back on that thread either. From these two threads she sounds like a wonderful lady. I hope she is just going through rehab and is improving. Anyone have contact numbers for her and able to call?
