Selling on E-bay

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Is it worth the effort to sell stuff on e-bay? Is anything a hassle about it?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

It depends what your selling. I don't think it's worth the hassles to make just a couple of bucks per auction. If you have a product that will make good money... sure it's worth it!

We sell on eBay. Like Poppysue says, if it's a decent amount of money you'll make, it's worth it. Often, you'll get more on eBay than you will selling an item locally (computers and peripherals, for instance). One thing to consider is whether to sell your items as a lot or as individuals; we're pondering this ourselves with some chef's knives we're going to list. Also, the less you open bidding at, the less your initial listing fee will be. But you have to be confident bidding will go high enough on the item even with a low starting price. It just takes some learning on what works well for you and what doesn't. Their free listing days are a great way to get your feet wet!

poppysue and gardenwife have it right. I sell collectible postcards and documents. I sold for four years on eBay and the fees have gotten so high that it is not worth the effort for items with small start up prices. If you are into selling a lot of items, the eBay fees are just the start. You have image hosting fees, fees if you accept PayPal and fees for auction mangagement programs that will be necessary.
I finally started my own dealers site.

I used to sell there but the hassle of packaging things up and taking them to the post office etc. Most of the time I just give the stuff to charity. I can write it off on my taxes and most of the time it is more than the cash I can sell it for. Plus they will come and get it! If you have books, movies or music to sell try half.com. Much easier and you only pay if you sell something.

Half.com is owned by eBay and they are phasing it out. How's that for good news. :S
