It is so sad....

(Zone 5a)

I think it is so sad when people that can afford to pay for a service but would rather steal them from people that do pay, so they can have free cable tv.

Let me explain, for the last 6 years I have been having problems with Road Runner getting and keeping me online, little did any of us know it was cause by one of neighbors stealing cable.

He paid someone to connect a wire to my hook-up at the top of the pole and made it look like one line from the ground.
Only when they decided to change all the wires from my house to the to the pole did they discover the problem

I have been without service off and on for the last three weeks. The only way I could get online even for a few minutes was to call RR and have them run all kind of test only to be cut off again.

What really adds salt to my wounds is the fact that he owns a used car lot and thinks nothing at gambling away $2 to $3 three thousand dollors a month on gambling.
He and his friends are always talking about how much money he has lost and he goes into great detail about it.

I am going to talk to the manager at Time-Warner to see what can be done to keep this from happening again.

Wheee! I needed that.....now I am off to try and catch up with what I have missed.

Some people are just thieves and don't have a conscience. This last winter, on Christmas Eve, I discovered our outdoor Christmas lights weren't working. After investigating it, I discovered that someone had actually come into our yard and stolen our electrial extension cord. This costs less than $10.00 and they had to climb up on our porch to have disconnected that. What a risk they took - most thieves aren't very smart. If you know who these people are, turn them in (as long as you aren't afraid of retaliation).

(Zone 5a)

I know what you mean and I am so glad that they didn't break into your home and steal everything you purchased for Christmas.

I just don't understand it especially since they said that it was a federal offense to steal cable here.
I am going to ask him to stop it or there will be retaliation from me. I have been through too much to let this guy get away with this.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

If the cable company came out and replaced the wires, they found the problem, didn't they? I would think they'd go after the guy themselves, unless they turn a blind eye the first time an offender's caught. That just stinks for you, Kit. :(

(Zone 5a)

The guys that come out here to do the work don't care. I have to report it myself if I want to stay online without problems.

I thought there was something wrong with my puter for a while until he hooked up his lap top to RR modem. He had them ping, plus doubled checked the IP address.

He was getting the same thing I was...NOTHING! He even changed the indoor wires, I just lucked up and got a good technician this time.
I was so relived to know that my poor old puter was ok.

You would believe how fast I am flying around the internet even with IE and Foxfire.
This is the second day I have been able to do that and I am enjoying it so much.

How do you like the weather we've been getting? Isn't it just great!

Are you going to come to Columbus to see the DOI?

Library News

See One of the Original Copies of the Declaration of Independence
A rare, original copy of the Declaration of Independence is coming to the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Main Library on March 12, 2004.

The document will be available for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the Declaration of Independence (DOI) Road Trip, a multi-media exhibit.

In June 2000, producer Norman Lear and his wife acquired the document with the goal of bringing the “People’s Document” back to the people. The DOI Road Trip was founded to take the document on a three-and-a-half year cross-country tour.

The DOI Road Trip's mission is to engage and energize all Americans, particularly young people, by bringing the Declaration to them. The Road Trip is a non-profit, nonpartisan project that hopes to inspire Americans to participate in civic activism, to exercise their rights and to vote.

For many, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. The exhibit includes two videos, which help illustrate the importance of the document. The Library has also invited the Franklin County Board of Elections to be on hand to register people to vote. Visitors will also have an opportunity to meet characters from the Colonial period.

Groups are asked to register by calling 614/645-2770.

I am so excited about it and I will be taking my camera.

Wow, that's a neat thing - I wasn't aware of the DOI's "tour". I saw a copy of it in Washington when I was in 8th grade on a school trip many (ahem) years ago.

(Zone 5a)

I hope you can make it, I am going to see if Lupy and Rosiesplace wants to go.

An aquantaince recently discovered his neighbor had run a cable from his house to the neighbor's house so he could get free cable TV. It was reported to the cable company and they are pressing the charges because he was stealing their services.

(Zone 5a)

That is good news I only hope that our cable company will do the same, thanks for giving me hope that something will be done.

DISCLAIMER: I am not the ROADRUNNER in question!! they stole my NAME! LOL Kit...that is mean of your neighbors....I would kindly ask them not to do it again...or you're going to dumdp your weeds you pull into their yard! LOL Jo

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Kit, I'd ask the cable company for an adjustment to your bill for the time your service was interrupted. That should be some insentive to go after your culprit.

(Zone 5a)

Lol Jo, but I don't think he would care if I dump anything in his yard because he pays someone else to do the cleaning and cutting of his grass, his the first to admit that he is lazy.

Weez I did ask them but even with the discount I am still paying $34.99 a month. If it happens again I am going to send a certified letter to the manger stating that if they don't do something about this problem I am going discontinue using their services.
I really like Road Runner because when it is working I can fly at a blink of an eye and I have gotten spoiled by that.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I'd send the cable company a letter requesting bill adjustment, listing the dates when service was interrupted. I'd also include the date the serviceman discovered the robbery. It may not make a difference, but at least they can't play dumb about it. The people that do these irresponsible things are facilitated by those who don't make the account for their actions... not referring to you, but the cable company.

We used to have people living behind us who were a real piece of work. (We think they were running some sort of illegal business, but that's another story.) They were stealing cable, but not us. A neighbor told my husband about it, so I don't know the details.

Lindale, TX(Zone 8a)

windsurffer, here they run a commercial offering rewards for tips on people that are stealing cable. Your cable company should jump at the chance to prosecute this guy.

Karrie20x, a little story that your post about someone coming onto your porch to steal your extension cord brought back to my memory.
Many years ago, a neighbor was seen crawling out of the window of my mother's house with things he had stolen. The police would do nothing so I told them that if I saw him back on her property again, I would shoot him. I was exagerating, but their answer was "if you shoot him, drag him back into the house".
Moral is: Don't steal anything in Texas, and get caught.

P.S. Once a northerner asked a Texas Sheriff why they hung people in Texas for stealing cattle and some Texans who shot people could get away with it. His answer: there's probably more people that need to be shot, than cattle that need to be stole".

(Zone 5a)

Well I talked to the manager today and was told to call the police, once I explain to him that it wouldn't do any good unless I saw them do it. He then went on to say that I should call the company the next time it happens.

I expressed my concern since this has happened before and if the service person reported it or not I am not sure but I wanted this one on the record. I also explained how many time their company has been out here for the problems I have had with Road Runner because of it.

Since it didn't seem to be a big deal to him I thought I would try another route, by stating that I didn't think his company would appreciate loosing money to have someone at my or other's house every week.

Not to mention that if it continues I would be forced to find another ISP provider, and since I have been paying customer since the 1980's I would also would be terminating my cable service as well.
He said he understood but all he could do was ask that I report any further problems.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I'd think the police could get statements from the cable technicians who redid the wiring and saw how it was tapped by your neighbor. That's stinky. :(

Try this forum, Kit. It's Roadrunner's forum at Broadbandreports.com: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/cable,rr

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Here, if a tech reports finding someone stealing cable he gets a bonus and the crime is vigorously prosecuted. Just watch yur serice and if it starts acting up again call them. But do not let the tech fix it without notifying the company first. They may want to send out an investigator to document the theft befor disconnecting it.

(Zone 5a)

Thanks GW, I will check it out.

Zany most of the people that work for Time Warner I have found get paid more to hook up illeagal cable for their friends.

The last young man that was here I am sure he reported it but as I've said the paper work gets lost and no one seems to care. I am not sure if TW offers that incentive here?
