Changing to Pot Gardening

Holland, MI(Zone 6a)

My wife and I have our home of 17 years up for sale, because we are planning to move into a retirement community in Holland MI.

This means that we will be saying farewell to our yard, and our gardening will be confined to pots on the patio. We will probably still be here when the daffodils we planted last year are in bloom.

Did anyone see the movie "Saving Grace" about the widow left bankrupt by her deceased husband.? She went into cahouts with the gardener who grew pot in the vicar's yard. Nah, I don't think so; I am retiring already.

I will remain in DG, because I enjoy the commararderie and help with my computering.

Bird...don't forget the Container forum, lots of good info there for your pot growing...er, uh, I mean "growing in pots"!

Where you are moving, can I ask if it's an apt-type building? Or will you still have your own individual house/abode? If so, I believe you may still be able to do a few things in the ground. (My parents can plant so many feet out from their house in their community; the maintenance folks leave it alone then and only mow right up to it.)

Horseshoe, we are moving into a 350 unit apartment complex in Holland, MI, which is about 30 minutes down the pike from Grand Haven. We will be moving into a spacious three room apartment on the fourth floor. No more composting. More computering.

Ohhh...okay. (Hope they have an elevator in that building.) (Course now, it might behoove ya to use the stairs on occasion, just to keep your health up!)

Sounds like you better invest in an Earth Box for your patio, so you can have fresh maters. Either that or I'll just have to send you my excess veggies.

Hey Bird, i live in a house with very little yard!! i do a lot with pots. i am sure its not going to be as much as you are used to. but you can still get your hands in the dirt! i have 3 rose's in pots. give me wonderful flowers for 4 yrs now. so it may not be all computer. and like horseshoe said ,the container forum is wonderful. your new place sounds very nice.good luck

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Luck to you Bird I admire your nerve but I am afraid I could not stand to live near 350 other units. I built this house 32 years ago and I'm at my last known address.

I don't think most of those humanoids would buy into my Goldens and quail and probably most of all me.

Shoe is right maybe a few earth boxes for tomatoes. There are some community gardens in town where city people can garden don't know if they steal each others stuff though LoL.

Anyway enjoy your retirement I am right behind you and when I do I'm getting a new Golden puppy Linda says no but whats she going to do divorce me over a present I give her ha ha enjoy Ernie

Growing pot err in pots was what I did on the balcony before we moved to ground level with a wee bit of a yard. On a 6 ft X 8 foot area I had a small table, 2 chairs and over 60 diferent plants including 3 budlias, Agapanthus, mini roses, cactus and succulent collectionand a miriad of other plants! So plan on filling that balconey with beauty!

But watch out for association rules. Some limit what you can have on the patio in addition to weight restrictions.
