Dave, I have an idea

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure how many new subscribers you get on a daily basis (I know you get alot of members) but it would be really nice for many of us if there were a daily list of new "subscribers" that we could welcome. As I've only been around since November, I have no idea who to say welcome to on the Welcome Mat forum, and would hate to say "welcome" to a long term member that just hasn't been around for awhile. Perhaps list it like you do the Birthdays, saying "Welcome new subscribers" on the home page or on the Welcome Mat forum home page? Would that be a ton of work or is it something fairly easy to do?

That's a very good idea. It would take just a little time but it'll be worth it. Look for it one day soon (hopefully!)

Thanks! You're the Best!

Kudos to Karrie! I was just vaguely wondering but never thought of translating into words almost the same question. Yes, it avoids being ridiculed - welcoming an old member. I have seen it in some threads, but the person(s) have remained silent, probably wisely ignoring the "silly welcome"!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Welcoming even an "old" member's not silly if you just say, "I realize you've beena member for a while, but I've not run across you in the forums at DG before and wanted to say hello and welcome you!". :)

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

That will be great it will allow you to quickly send them a personal email and welcome them and so many new members have trouble getting around and don't always see the welcome forum.
What a great idea!!!!!

I would like for us to set up a "Mentor Program". Some of us that have been members long enough to know our way around could volunteer to be assigned to a newbie for a few weeks...to help them find their way around the Garden...answer questions ....just make them feel comfortable. What do you think? Jo

Sounds like a nice idea, however, how would it be organized? I have found that many people are very nice in here, helping others navigate to various forums.

Great Idea Jo! I've written a few newbies myself to offer help, not that I've always had much luck.

Perhaps a few of us could be "on duty" each day or week, one for journal help, one for general questions? Mentors or "Guides" could be listed along with the new folks?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

As kind of a newbie myself, I would really appreciate a mentor of some sort. It's taken a lot of stumbling around to find some things, no telling what I'm missing because I haven't stumbled on it yet. And most definitely, it would be a great help to have some direction with the Journal!

I can help with a lot of things...but not the journal or PDB!! Be glad to help otherwish...just email me. Jo

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Jo, thanks so much, I can use all the help I can get. Should I just e-mail you directly (through Daves' Garden) with questions? I can tell you right now, one of the things I am struggling with (besides the journal), is trying to get some "nuts & bolts" how-to information on gardening. I guess when I have a specific thing I want to know, I keep thinking the info is out there somewhere, and try to find it by wading through the forums. Should I just start a new thread (guess I'm a little shy)? Or maybe there's a place on each forum that has some basic information w/out wading through threads that seem promising, but ultimately don't answer my question...

Maggiemoo...I am emiling you. Jo

I think having a mentor would be great!!! I have belong to DG for a Little over a year. and i am still looking and finding things i didn't know was here. I may not be new!! but i still need help at times. I am sure there is others out there that fell the same. so I give a thumbs up for the "MENTOR PROGRAM" I am not sure how much i can help. but will be glad to help anyway i can.
