Echoes, so glad to hear the poppies germinated! Keep us posted.

Potofgold, do other gardeners in your area grow Meconopsis? Do you have any seed to try again?

!!!!!!!!!!!!

????????
A little update. Boy these things are tetchy. I thought the grandis were going to take off and pass the betonicifolia, but although I only have 5 or 6 survivors there, the grandis are not doing much better. It's harder to keep them cool now, without putting them outside. Although the room cools down nice at night. Don't have them too close to the lights. Whoever said starting them is a lot easier than keeping them growing was sure right. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but everytime another one croaks, I feel so sad.

The grandis and napaulensis ordered from Dominion arrived yesterday, and the leaves are slightly browned on the edges. Hope I can at least keep them alive for awhile. Too bad they had to sit in a post office all weekend.

Greta, if you are zone 4b, and they seem to do good in Alaska, I'd most certainly at least give them a try! Maybe you will be one of the few with something to be proud of! :)

Don't throw them in the river, throw them in a flower bed.

thanks guys!
You make me feel better, I have a good spot and will defintely do exactly as everyone says...... geez it would be so dreamy! As long as my DH doesnt mow them down! No seriously, I have a spot which seems good. You never know, just wish more people got to enjoy these in their yards rather than in magazines!!!
Cheers and thankyou so much for your enthusiasm.

I bought a plant last year. Did very well in May and June but when the searing heat of August came, even tho' it was in shade and the soil had been amended in peat, it fried. :( If we only knew at purchasing time what temps our summers had in store.

oooof! just found cowboys link about h2o2 germinating and I put all my seeds in directly a fedw days ago. Oh well.Ill try h2o2 mixing in the beds.

I have ordered some seed of the larger variety of this poppy. I think I will try the peroxide method for germination that I gave a thread for above. However, I belive that the summers here in Ohio will not work for this plant. I am going to try some outside and some in pots inside where the temperature is controlled and I can adjust lighting. I figure I can winter the pots in my Florida room or the garage. Anybody think that this will work? Poppy house plants???

I know you aren't supposed to be able to grow Meconopsis here in Ohio but several years ago I got a catalog from Weird Dude's Plant Zoo in Virginia and he said he grew it and it did fine, even with days over 100 degrees in summer. I am trying to remember what he said he grew it with.....corydalis maybe? It was a partly shaded location, as I recall. I think one of the biggest problems here might be the heavy clay soil.

Anyhow, I say go for it. If it works, I live just down Main Street from you. I can sneak over under cover of darkness and steal some. &:^)

Wow!!! You guys are devoted!!! Remember how I was joking about my DH mowing them down, well sure enuf the other day I was blabbing on to him about gardening ( he's no green thumb) and I said I put the blue poppies down under the magnolia ( he knows Im worried about them working) ... and like three hours later he raked up the yard and raked that whole area.
he he I have to laugh cause Ive felt so doomed with these biggers that at least the other shoe has dropped. We have pretty cold seasons here in Maine but I put them in a rather protected spot that I consider a zone 6 so we'll see if after all this drama whether they'll show up. My guess is the spot will get too hot this summer. But to me hot is 80's in the shade.
