New Member Page.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Went to my member page. I like the new look. Thanks Dave.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, me too. I noticed it earlier today, but figured that since I'm not very observant, it had probably been that way for days.

Willamette Valley-OS, OR(Zone 8a)

Looks Great All Boxed In Dave.
Nice and Clean Looking!

Yes, that is a very neat look!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Cool! Ya'll made me go look, didn't ya!

(And my page loaded in only 12.24 jiffies!)

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Hmm, mine loaded in 12.03 jiffies. What the heck is a jiffie? And did I beat you Shoe? LOL :) Kathy

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

"Jiffies" a dave-ism meaning a very short span of time, as in "be there in a jiffy!"

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Is jiffy a northern thing, Dave? I've heard that term all my life. Like the page design, btw.

P.S. Merriam-Webster shows "jiffy" has been around since 1779, but the etymology is unknown. Now I'm hooked - wanna know!

A jiffy is 1/100th of a second. It's a technical term. :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

But...It came from somewhere else originally, meaning quick. The nerds stole it, LOL! :D

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

Very, very nice!

LimeyLisa Kay

GW - definitely. I remember growing up my mom used to use the word jiffy all the time. "Be there in a jiffy!".

I was browsing the Linux kernel source code last week and came across the jiffy and I liked it. :)

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Dave,....is browsing the Linux codes, like browsing through a flower catalog? lol

Sorry, it just struck me kind of funny as it sounds so boring to me.....OOp's, I'll get out of here in a Jiffy!!

Donna

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Nice work Dave!

Yes, I was actually reading the code trying to understand how the VM (virtual memory) system was allocating swap and real memory. This was because the server was mishandling the memory.

Rick van Riel has some VM patches against Linux was I applied and tested. It worked pretty good but I scrapped the new server before really testing the patched kernel.

And, along the way, I ran across jiffies all over the place. :) 1,530 files in the Linux source code tree use "jiffies".

(And yes, Donna, it's like a flower catalog to me. Patches to my kernel are like new cultivars of your favorite species! Especially with Linux, you can even extend it yourself! It's like genetically modified software, where you can go in and change the genes yourself quite easily!)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

You KNOW you're a diehard whatever when you find yourself reading text-only catalogs and books for the sheer joy of it.

(I can get lost for hours in the SSE yearbook, or Forestfarm or JL Hudson's catalogs ;o)

Back the original topic: I agree; nice work on the member page, Dave!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I thought you guys were kidding here,I just posted to Cala,I about blew coffee out my nose, when I saw 1.9 jiffies at the bottom of the post!!!LOL!!!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I agree, the member page looks great. I do keep wondering why some titles are in blue and some in green. Is there a meaning behind the colours? Like on the right side - DG Network - Dave's Garden and Plant Database are in green, the rest of the list is in blue. why? The titles 'Home' and 'Member Page' are green, the rest are blue. I am a bit of a 'puter dummy, actually more like a lot of a dummy but I do like to learn. (doesn't mean I'll remember!) :)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

you haven't clicked on the blue links yet.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Thanks tiG! that was definitely a DUH!! but I'm used to them - 3 'boys' here that think mother is just barely out of the dinosaur age!!!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

39 jiffies! Can you tell I'm on a dial-up?

Love the new look Dave, Thanks for the wonderful site.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Llilyfan, yours took 44.6 jiffies for me and I'm on cable! This is too funny, Dave. :D

Very nice Dave, and thank you. Mine took 19.05 jiffies, cool, huh?

North Tonawanda, NY(Zone 3a)

Hah! 18.84 jiffies on a dial-up for my member page, waaay cool!

BTW - it doesn't matter about dialup or fast net connection. The jiffies are actually counting how long it took my server to generate the page. :)

For example, Terry's member page takes quite a few jiffies because she has to many things that the system has to count before it can send it to you. :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Heh, that's why yours took 94.17, too, Gourdhead.

When I went back to make sure that truly was a gourd on your noggin, it said 29.9 jiffies. Is that because it was already loaded once and therefore the server didn't have to download the grapics a second time? Inquiring minds want to know (well, one mind does, anyway).

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Yes, I too saw it just now and liked the neat look.

Jiffy - learnt a new thing! Now I know why people say "I'll be back in a jiffy" .... and usually take hours!

GW: I'm using two performance enhancing softwares on the server: once caches the database queries, and the other caches the PHP code.

So, when you hit the first time and it loads in 1,000 jiffies, if you immediately reload, it might only take 50 jiffies the second time. It is helpful when my server is getting slammed on the same page by a link to a specific page by a big website.

dave

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I actually understand some of what you're saying, and it makes great sense. All it takes is one good mention and a lot of traffic to slam a page...Look at how hard it was to get through to the extenstions page for Firefox last night! :D

Exactly, that's right. And, if I may, the extensions folks need to rethink their web strategy. Being offline for more than 2 days really isn't acceptable.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, I know - it's awful. For those who have been there already, it's frustrating enough. For someone brand new to the product, it could make or break the new relationship if one can't get to support and the extenstions.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Ok, you guys have lost me, and it really doesn't matter - like the new member page, although mine probably loads in A jiffy, as there ain't nuthin' there, but I REALLY like the jiffy thing!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I knew I wasn't the only one on the Firefox extensions page last night!!!

BTW....downloaded Thunderbird last night and I'm finally free of Nutscape after years of using it!! Thanks, Dave and GW! Even my nerd husband was impressed that I found a great new browser before he did!!!

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

how can I change the location from just my town to town state and zone? I must have made a mistake when I first joined?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi, downscale_babe -- Just go to PREFERENCES in the sidebar to your right and click LOCATION in the next page's left sidebar. That'll take you to where you need to be. :)
