So far this winter, I haven't had to heat the garage any at all. As kerosene fumes are bad for the brugs, I would only use a supplemental heater for a short period of time if it got super cold for an extended period of time. It has been cold here, but I put insulation film over the garage door windows and the side door last fall. It seems to have made a difference as it has not gotten below about 45 degrees. Most days, it measures about 50-55 degrees - - just warm enough to be inviting for the aphids!
I also have a couple of mini greenhouses in the garage which I use to keep my coleus, small bananas and EE's and other small tropicals in.
I also have several brug trees that are dormant in the basement. I have lusted after having a greenhouse, but have decided that the garage does just fine. What I need is a storage building for all my stuff (lawnmower, pots, chairs, etc.) and that would free up a lot more room for plants. I figure this option would be much cheaper than a greenhouse and I wouldn't have to worry about having to heat another building.
My little garage bloom-

Welcome Gardenmrswi, You will surely enjoy DG and make lots of new friends. I have had Charles Grimaldi brug for several years, just last year was given seeds and cuttings by some great people here in DG. I have small greenhouse, where I have a tree brug Pink Beauty that I bought from Logees last spring. It went ahead and bloomed after i moved it in last fall, its last bloom has been open now for four days. Donna
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome again. Root, thank you for your kind offer. Spring would be best 'cuz it's been mighty cold here!
If your brugs are blooming now, do they also bloom in the summer? Can they be kept in a cool (50-60) degree basement over winter with grow lights?
Ruth, Pink Beauty sounds wonderful. Would love to see a picture of it.
Hope, I know the feeling! With almost every plant I've had! Sounds like it is definitely worth the wait!
