My little garage bloom-

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Imagine my surprise when I found this little bloom a few minutes ago. It's not pretty, but it smells good and it is a bloom in the middle of winter. Who new a dormant plant could/would bloom?

Kristi:

Maybe the little bloom is a sign of hope, heralding the arrival of an early Spring. :) I think it's beautiful.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Aww...that is so sweet. Which one is it? Think you should let it live, just for brightening up all our days. Thanks for sharing.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

What a great suprise!!! :o)

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

And it looks like there's a bud behind it! How great is that?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Alright!!!Isn't this just the best surprize!!!

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

That doesn't look like a bud to me - - it looks like a seed pod!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Nice surprise. I'm still waiting on something to just bud for me.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone! It really was a great surprise. Gloria this is the little seedling that I gave away to a landscape guy. Found it a couple months later in a trash pile, he threw it out. http://davesgarden.com/t/395616/

Yep Nat it's a seed pod. Many of the plants in the garage have pods. Mayan Magic is loaded with pods. I've been waiting for them to get ripe.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Accckkkk in a trash pile! Bet he won't get too many more from you? Maya sport has a couple blooms coming, if they don't fall off. Will keep you posted, as I have not seen mine bloom yet.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

What a great surprise in the middle of winter! If it can produce a wonderful bloom NOW, just think of how it will bloom for you during the summertime!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

don't cha love it!!!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

datdog,
..... I just read all 3 threads you have inter-linked on this brug. What a good story, I really enjoyed reading all of it =)

BTW..Good save !

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Boy if it doesn't get some color, pollinate it and put some pink in it. It has a nice shape and very long tendrils.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

That's what mine look like.. They are in the garage! THey are all ugly now, no bloom! WOw, you got several pods!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Oh it looks so lonely. Maybe somemore will bloom in and join her. LOLOL

Milwaukee, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi gmrs.Wisconsin. Hope you like it here.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Kristi, there's nothing like blooms in the middle of winter to lift your spirits! It's snowing here right now, and your seedling that I've been calling Kristi's White is STILL blooming in the basement. It's been blooming since last summer, and still has a dozen blooms on it right now. I think that this will be the end when these blooms finish, I haven't seen any more buds coming on. The flowers last a really long time on this one in the winter, I noted the date on one of them when it opened, it's on the 13th day now, and looks as good as the first day that it opened. I have one seedpod on it, too. The hummingbird moth did it, but it's probably Sunset, Dr. Suess or Ecuador Pink.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I was wondering, do you heat your garage? I was afraid to put my brugs in the garage here, but looks like yours are doing great and blooming. Next year I will have to many to but in my laundry room, having a hard time with them this year. Thanks, Cathy

Milwaukee, WI(Zone 5a)

Thank you Scooterbug, Brugie and Hibiscus, for the warm welcome. I'm a 'daylily' enthusiast but love all flowers.
I thought the picture was that of an 'angel tears'; what is a brug? (brugmansia)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've not heard them called angel tears, but they are called angel trumpet by some. All I can say is: If you aren't ready for another addiction, don't start. However, what you would be missing by not growing just one.....well the evening through early morning fragrance would be what I would miss second to the sheer beauty of the huge blooms. Have I got you interested yet? LOL! Seriously, I do hope you will try one sometime. They are an awesome plant.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

If you love all flowers, then you are in trouble. That's how I got started on Brugs. Now, the rest of the flowers don't matter nearly as much. Once you've seen and smelled a bloom...........you are addicted.

Milwaukee, WI(Zone 5a)

You are right 'Angel Trumpets'! I never bought one because the only place I've seen them is catalogs like Michigan Bulb and Burgess. Not the most trustworthy for buying unfamiliar plants. So, IF you had to pick 1 (one) Brug to last you the rest of your days, which one and where would you get it from?

gardenmrswi (Judi)

Do they smell as good as an Oriental Lily or Sweet Autumn Clematis?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

This is one of the first ones I got, from a catalog, had it for years, just a white.
4th of July it was the first to bloom,I love it.Smelled like Heaven.

Yep, needed that extra large bib! Way drooling here ☺

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL..............Judi you came to the right place to ask WHAT IS A BRUG!!! This time next year, you will be sorry you stopped in when your poor daylilies are begging for some attention!

I do no think I have met the one and only brug yet that I want for my whole lifetime. But maybe I will soon! LOL

Poppysue here has me very interested in daylilies these days. Glad you came over to visit!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL!!!!
Judi,You can see,DON"T BUY A BRUG!!!!
We are obsessed!
You can see from this post,it started with a picture of Datdogs' single bloom in her garage,to a full blown Calif. tree!!!!
And right now, sitting here in KC.I'd trade you anything to smell that single bloom!
Run while you can, because we will send you cuttings,we are beyond help here.
Don't show this to the Catalogs, they will hate us.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Datdog, my garage looks a lot like yours (only mine is more junked up). And I too, have one solitary bloom that makes the garage smell heavenly.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Isn't it nice to have a bloom. Think your garage might be a little warmer than datdogs'.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey Root, I need your addy to send you some luffa seeds :) Can't find it anywhere in my files. Sorry to interupt thread...

Back to trying to remember the fragrances of my brugs while they were blooming. Mine are under lights and seem to have an idea that Spring is close. They are beginning to grow leaves again ~ yippee!!!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

You have mail Morph!Thanks!

Milwaukee, WI(Zone 5a)

OMG, rootdoctor and scooterbug...I..THINK...I....HAVE....TO.....HAVE.....1!

Are there many different kinds?? or just different colors?
or crazy like daylilies, lilies, orchids, tulips, etc?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Gardenmrswi,All you need to do is start a thread in this forum, ask,we are willing and able.
It will be spring before I do any shipping, but I know others may have cuttings ready to go.
As you can tell,we are nuts about them, and like Lilies and others, there are new ones coming out all the time.
If you can wait till spring, send me your address.
Root
Gosh Kristi,we sure did run away with your thread, sorry, give that bloom a whiff for me!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Both, more kinds and more colors. Just look back at some of the old threads and you will see some pictures that will knock your socks off.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Awww, it's okay Root- heck it's just a * u g l y* bloom! I'm happy to see the trafic here. I've not been visiting too much. Someone asked it the garage was heated- yes, but just to 40F.

Welcome to DG gardenmrswi!

Nat your garage is better- has a sunny window. Do you heat yours?
