Starting Seeds

Lansing, MI(Zone 6a)

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum for this type of question - all I could find was 'seed trading'. I have a number of different types of seeds. There's 18" of snow on the ground and at least 3 more months of cold weather. When do I start my seeds? Does Datura get started at a different time than, oh say, Milkweed? I bought a couple of grow lights and thought I would start them in the basement (it's finished) but the temp is 53 down there. Is that too cold to start them? My cats like to graze and I don't want to risk poisoning them, so the basement is the only safe place to start seeds growing. Any advice?

I have a great file I got off the web long ago that gives info on winter sowing and then general sowing info for hundreds of types of seeds, depth, light needed, medium, etc. If you can get an excel file, click on my name and I'll mail it out.

if you download this program http://www.software602.com/download/home.html you'll be able to open the files, it won't convert in email. The program is free and you'll probably use it for a lot more than this!
if you do give it a try, email me and I'll send the file.
