baby its cold.....

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Have we all frozen??? What's it like in your world. Mine has been - 30 to -45 with wind chill for almost a week and I'm getting mighty tired of it. Hanging about the southerners thread hoping the warmth will wear off LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Well we've had balmy temps of -64F (with windchill)...the day this pic was taken and the day before was a toasty -52F
(with windchill) and now we are around your temps. Two weeks ago we had rain...local paper had pics. of children skating on the sidewalks and street (about 1/3 inch of ice) and the temps. just got better and better after that. :b

Where my DH works the manager quit...to cover him they brought in a fellow from Vancouver Island. He's shell-shocked by the temps and his eyes have a fixed glaze. He spends too much time listening to the local weather station....he also can't believe that schools haven't closed and that everyone has kept on working.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Blizzard moving in today...wind picking up speed and temps are dropping.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

You got that right. The temp hit a balmy minus 24C this am but the wind out of the east is strong and there is snow falling?? (blowing sideways) Almost got the tractor stuck this am - talked to it like it was a team of horses. Who says mechanical things don't have hearts LOL They keep promising improvement in a few days.

On a completely unrelated note to this thread have you ever ordered seeds from the Butchart Gardens. There prices seem unbelievably low - wished I had visited sooner but have made a note for next year. Any info on quality, germination rates etc.

Nope x2 :)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I can imagine he's shellshocked Pam. Victoria is even milder than Vancouver most of the time.
We haven't had your cold but we've got flooding. Does that could as an apocalypse?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Start to wonder...Key Lake, Sk., on Jan 28,2004...the day we had the -64 with windchill, had almost that temp. (without windchill) and was declared the coldest place in the world on that day...beating out both poles.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks for making me feel like I have it good,6º today.
If they closed school in my home state of Mi.,as much as they do here, for cold or a few flakes of snow,I would still be in school! And I'm 45!LOL!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Trust me rootdoc you're in the tropics! ;)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

.....it's heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere!!!!!!
whiteout conditions...out of town plants are closing and workers have been sent home (if they can see the highway to get home)!?!

edited to say the RCMP have closed down the TransCanada now.

I sure hope that blows out before it gets here. Even the house sparrows look frozen.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Pam, keep the cold and stormy weather out west please. Been cold enough over here during the last 2 weeks and I'm happy that we finally got above -20°C ;).

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

oh no...I want to share!!!!! ;~D

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Our temps have been down to ten below zero F. for the last couple of nights. Too darned cold for me. Sunday and Monday we could get a foot of additional snow. Isn't winter wonderful? Bah humbug!!

Liz, is the flooding really bad like it was a while back? I'm glad you are up high. Hope everyone will be okay.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Just think if we didn't have the great gift of freezing all our 2000 parts regularly we'd be as overpopulated as California - some consolation.
Traffic today is insane and every day this week except today we've had a major fire. First a 68 unit condo, then the oriental markets in the centre of town and yesterday Lilydale poultry plant on the south side. There have been so many fried chicken jokes it's embarassing.
And we haven't had this bad a january for business in a decade. Can't say I blame people for wanting to stay home - or eat out somewhere with covered parking and pedway access.
Keep warm everyone.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Sorry to hear that jagonjune. Cold weather seems to bring the firemen out on a regular basis.

How are you doing Liz and the rest of the west coast?

Our streets are springing leaks all over...top of the hill there is a big one and the water is pouring down our street.
Should make the journey to work interesting in the morning.
We also have a four foot drift in front of our door and the blizzard won't be over till well into the morning.

How are you doing echoes? Though the wind is coming from the east here...we hear it will be heading your way.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

TAlked to my brother Wed. and he said it was -29 F. in Edmonton. I have a sister there too. That's about 20 deg. worse than we are. Yuk!

I think it went SOUTH. It's clear and cold this AM. Haven't heard the weather yet, but we're supposed to get some snow this PM.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

I remember a winter near Yorkville, Sask.......a number of years ago! We took the kids to my husband's brother's farm for Christmas! To this day, I look back on it as a goofy thing to have done.....but the kids enjoyed it immensely!..Annyhow, I can look back and remember the day, my husband, his brother and me took a ride on the ski-doo in -40? cold...we hit a bump in the snow out in the wheat fields and off I flew into about an 8' snowbank! They stood there laughing and goofing off whilst I did my darndest to get out of predicament I was in! Herb, my BIL., had dressed me in, about 4, maybe 5, layers of clothing......well, mommies, can you remeber dressing your own kids to go out into the snow....and they couldn't move hardly??? Well,.....picture me trying to extract myself from the white stuff! I have never lived this adventure down..the rest of the family has given me the name, "city slicker" And I was skinny back then! I betcha echoes and lilypon can relate to this tale! I guess we, live in the banana belt of Canada! And then there was the summer, at harvest time back there!@#$%^&* E.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

ROFLMAO...thank God our winter wear has improved since back then. But we are layering our clothes so much now we prob. don't look too much different. Your stories are ours Elaine...we know exactly what you are talking about!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

We're enjoying a warm spell here in Seward, Alaska. It's almost -1.6 degrees C. or 29 degrees F. It was about 6F yesterday morning, our coldest yet, I think. I'm sure it was much colder with windchill, but today there is no wind to chill, and I'm concerned about the ice cube trays on the porch. What will I do for cocktail hour!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

but I can grow Floramerica's here and not in a greenhouse..............nanannannnnnnnnnnaa ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

OK, Lilypon, you can tell I can't grow a decent tomato around here, because I had to check Googles to find out what the heck a Floramerica is! Strangely enough, one of the sites they listed was our own PDB and it's a bit embarassing to see this variety listed without a whit of information... some reference, eh? Maybe you could fill in some blanks?

One of the things I truly miss is a good homegrown tomato. I can grow cherry tomatoes in the greenhouse with effort, but I'm usually too busy in the summer to tickle their blooms and talk nice nice to them... you are a lucky dog to have fresh tomatoes, warm from the sun... I am green (tomato) with envy!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It was developed in Florida and needs a hot summer to do well.......of all the tomatoes my Dad has grown in his life the Floramerica is his favorite. I love it's taste and it keeps so well...I've lost many tomatoes after our finale pick but not one Floramerica.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

There is nothing quite as satisfying as biting into a fresh tomato warm from the garden! When I was young and lived in Indiana, we could grow good tomatoes, but all the new varieties were not available in those days. My father used to grow 'Marglobe' and 'Golden Jubilee', as I recall. My mother canned them whole and made tomato juice. It was wonderful. I swear, fresh tomatoes are about the only thing that could lure me out of Alaska!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I can almost smell the vine right now........

You could always come visit Saskatchewan this summer :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

If you see a really big posterior sticking up in your tomato patch, Lilypon... it is I.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

This is what our yard looked like last night...our daughter ran out to catch our cat.

Looking forward to *meeting* you Carol :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Same here, Lilypon... when can I expect ripe Tomatoes!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Unless I start some soon......prob. mid to end of August ;)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

and our yard the next day..........

Weez maybe if you put sheets of metal to reflect the light it would get hot enough to ripen the tomatoes ???

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've seen folks all over Seward try to grow tomatoes outside, but it never seems to work. One sad attempt was the 'Wall of Water' protectors around the pots. I think we're too wet and to cool to do it properly. They can be grown successfully in the greenhouse or coldframe, but I've never seen truly good yields under any circumstances. I always pick the earliest varieties, mostly cherry types, but get more green than red by the end of our season. I put my zucchini plants along the south side of the outside of my greenhouse, and they do fine, but no big yields there either. Ah, well, guess I need a winter get away in hot country to grow and can tomatoes!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Are your 2,000 body parts warming up jagonjune? It was such a treat to be outside here today. :)
