Weather Sayings and Superstitions

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Here's a spinoff from the Punxatawny Phil topic in the Voting Booth.

What weather sayings and/or superstitions do you have where you live?

I can't say that I've ever heard any for southern California, just the one that we made up for our house - "If you can hear the train, it isn't going to rain." That one really works. The train tracks are a few miles to the northeast and rain never comes from the northeast. The tracks are far enough away that when the weather changes direction, we can't hear the train. This doesn't mean that if you can't hear the train, it will rain, but only that if you can hear the train, it will not rain. Now, if it smells like snow, then it is going to rain.

St. Swithins' Day (15th July) if thou dost rain,
Full 40 days it shall remain
St. Swithins' Day if thou be fair,
Full 40 days twill rain no more

My great-grandmother always said that when cows lie down, it's going to rain.

red sky at night is sailors delight - red sky in morning is sailors warning.

Red sky in the morning doesn't seem to mean much here and when we see it, it is usually on the way to work, so my husband and I say, "red in the morning, [our workplace] is boring". :-)

Kelli -- Red sky at morning means morale needs some shoring, huh?
