seed germination-DAYlilies

Check with another southerner... I'm thinking in your zone, you could just chill them and plant them, either directly or outside in a flat....

I will be putting a couple of flats under lights this winter! :-)

The glass jar approach is interesting -- I would have thought the absence of oxygen would be a problem -- maybe the hydrogen peroxide compensates for that.

critterologist, thanks for the link.

I wonder if a sticky thread with links to various propation techniques could be kept on this forum.
So that newbies could get the gist of a method and then ask about the details etc.

Mary I put my seeds in a damp paper towel and then put them in a ziploc bag and they all germinated with the exception of 2. I labelled everything of course. I had prechilled them also, but they got off to a quick start. I let them grow in the towels for quite a while and potted them up. They're doing fine now.

Thanks Fran! Sounds easy enough. Ill give it a try.

one note about paper towels... sometimes rootlets will try to grow into or through the towel... if that happens, just tear away the bit of paper and plant it with the seed rather than trying to separate the roots from the paper. If you use coffee filters rather than paper towels, you can generally avoid that problem.

I assume the papertowel/coffeefilter approach doesn't work for tiny seeds -- but maybe I am wrong. Thoughts?

A friend of mine even did onion seeds this way one year, but I think she went a little nutty trying to pick up those tiny seeds with tweezers...

With the tears streaming down her face (lol)!

I did the same as Critter. When they sprouted I just put them in planting mix. I also ended up planting some of the paper towel with the plants. No problem, they will rot too. Actually, I had forgotten how much fun this was. Will have to go thru my seeds and start again after the first of the year.

Gotta get the holidays out of the way first and then it is a super project for those nasty late winter blahs. My problem is that I enjoy watching the seeds so much that I plant way too many and then have tons of plants to give away in May and June. Come early May I put them all out in my portable greenhouse. By that time I am really anxious to get them out of the house and I don't have room for anything else.

Then by June it is time to plant out. We have a really short growing season and this gives us a good jump on it.
