You know the minute I saw this I had to try it. I am only sorry that I only had a few daylilly seeds that I hadn't all ready winter sown.
How are you doing with the ones you have done?

Wow! That works well it seems. Do you use this technique on other lilies?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I used this method for daylily and canna seeds last year and had record results. And poor Dori has SO many to start. LOL

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I put a few asiatic seeds that I had in a bottle just to see what would happen.
I have gotten to be quite the little experimenter!!(or maybe I am just loosing my mind all together)
Nosiness and curiosity have gotten the best of me how many does Dori have????

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LMBO Oh Dori, do you want to confess??

you really dont expect me to count every seedling do you ladies???
I will go count different "crosses" that i have started!
Chele your so ..............sweet! ;)

80 kinds thats not bad!
oh there are some more seeds on their way to my house! :P

I havent started anything else YET-but IRIS are next on the list.

HUGZ!

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I started about 15 crosses and thought was pretty impressed with myself, I obviously have a lot of catching up to do to keep up with you guys. (oh oh does that sound like keeping up with the joneses or what)
Do you sell or just keep them all to yourself?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I am so WHAT??? Bad? hehehe

Forget it Alice, Dori is a chick on a mission. There will be NO keeping up with her. ;) (Addicted comes to mind)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

This method is sorta of the same... but the seeds go into little zip-lock bags and back into the fridge for a few weeks. Looks like it would take up less space and be easier to keep track of crosses. ... Epecially for someone as eager as Dori! ;)

LOL sue i have some in little ziplock bags too!-Trying to get the all into flats now!

:)

Dori, when I had too many (hah! did I say that??) canna and hems last year, I put like kinds in butter bowls that were cut down to half depth. I seperated them when I put them out in the garden. It works well when you are running out of room, seed mix and/or cells. :)

Well, I started the last 6 set of seeds you sent me, Sue, using the water in bottles method above. We'll see how they do, but it looks easy. The first 3 sets I put in potting soil in containers, and they are coming up already.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

dori,
...... Do you think I could do this with hosta seeds ?

I'm going to do my daylilies like this. I was going to use the water-baggies in water technique, but I like the way your plan lets them get some growth before potting them up.
I will need to plant them in community pots so how far apart would you suggest???
Send the bill for your professional advice to me, I'm in the DG Address Exchange....lOL

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Im not sure about hostas-but it seems like it should work for anything. mho
I have them in community pots-but mine are like 2inches apart-im sure i will have to seperate them sooner or later-hoping to put them in the ground by then! lol

No billing-i love sharing!

I copied this method from a wonderful gal named patricia-she sent me so many great crosses i didnt want to screw up!!!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Wow just saw this post, Very interesting how they did the seed germination. Those of you that did try this method you did put in the Hydrogen peroxide? or did it without it. I would love to try this method, And I've been wanting to do some seed germination of daylilies etc. I have candy lily seeds and blackberry seeds. I think I'll try them this way. Does anybody have glorosia lily seeds they would care to trade, or some day lily seeds? if so email me and I'll send a list of my seeds to you so we can trade.

I'm glad I found this thread.

and the info on it is great.

Kathy ann, blackberry lily seeds will sprout quickly if you refrigerate them for a week. ;)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

thanks badseed, for the info, getting ready to do that

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Hi scooterbug - did you read the link that poppysue posted? I just did and the gal said she uses 6 Tbls. to 1/2 gal. of distilled water. It sure looks like a good method! :)

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

thanks !!!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Guess I better go change the water, my solution is way too weak .

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Dang! Can't believe ya'll are enticing me into playing with daylillies again! Looks like such a fun project.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

This method has given me nearly 100% germination with my DL seeds. I have also used it on my MG, and Daturas with similar success.
Thanks for the info on the H2O2 methods NotMartha :-)

Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 5b)

I am going to try this with some of the harder-shelled seeds. Thanks for the tip!

This is a very nice old thread, and quite useful too; so I'm bumping it up to the top for some thing to do when the weather outside is not so hot or gloomy. Thanks to everyone who was in this discussion.

Thank you, NatureWalker for bumping this thread. I can think of a couple of types of seeds I am going to try this procedure on. Dotti

Hi...I loved this info! Am curious...what seeds have been used with the method, and what has your experience been? Does seed size matter? I'd really be interested, and assume others would be too!

Hi Tracy,

Welcome to Dave's. I've used this method on seeds that were the hardest to germinate. Especially perennials, even small ones. I'm thinking very hard of trying them on some columbine seeds next.

It was this thread that started me using Hydrogen Peroxide every time I water. No problem with overwatering any more. Jeanette

It was this thread that started me using Hydrogen Peroxide every time I water. No problem with overwatering any more. Also started many seeds this way. A lot of brugs but I did peel them first.

Jeanette

Gresham, OR(Zone 8a)

Jeanette - do you mean that you use Hydrogen Peroxide every time you water all your mature garden plants, too?

Tracy

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I sure do, the plants in pots. Don't really think the ones in the ground need it. I suppose however if they got overwatered, and I don't think rain will do that, that I would then.

Jeanette
