DISH satellite

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

We have lost our DISH signal(snow and ice) and have tried to adjust the dish but still no signal and no picture. I have the elevation degree and azmuth(?) degrees for my area. How do I use the compass to find the right degree? I am holding out from calling a technician who will charge a minimum of $90 to align it up for me. Anyone ever used the compass? Or do those dish things get old and need replacing after so many years? Ours is 12 years old.

It might be interference from a storm, we loose our sattelite signal sometimes in stormy weather. Otherwise just keep guessing at it and adjust a bit at a time. Ours has gotten moved a bit a few times from snow falling off the roof, getting bumped by a falling branch, etc, and we have always been able to adjust it without much problem. My husband installed our dish and adjusted it himself, maybe you have a friend or neighbor who did the same and could get some help there without calling a tech guy. Check for loose wires too, that could happen over time.

Be sure and clean the dish of all ice and snow. Tree branchs can also hinder the signal.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Ice and snow on the dish and on the little arm where the signal comes from will diminish or lose signal. Clean off both. There shouldn't have been much movement with just a storm...we've hit our post with the lawntractor and were able to get it back on track with no problem. Look for the marks that the bolts left and put it back there. It shouldn't be but just fractions of an inch to the signal.

You also might want to check those metal connector thingys along the cable way. We had one go bad, and it wasn't even that old. Luckily for us, we had just bought a new HD receiver so when the technician was here to check it out, he charged it under warranty work.

We have lost our signal before but never had a problem adjusting the dish a wee bit and getting it back. But this time we have spent lots of time over the past 3 days attempting to get the signal and no luck. We have checked our connectors because one did rust out last year. I have read where a Satellite Finder Meter may help. They are in the $25 range but on ebay for $8 or so. We set our own system up without a technician years ago.
