WELL HAD TO BRING BACK MY NEW CPU!
Go for Dell, Redrose -- Gateway may just give you more headaches, which I'm sure you don't need! Sorry to hear you're computerless for a while again. :(
I second GW's advice Redrose. I bought a new Dell last year and havn't had the first problem. You can get them cheap too!
Yep, I'd say Dell too. Since I have a Gateway....I'd trade it for a Dell anyday!
Good luck
I walked into a Gateway once with a full page ad from that days paper, a whole setup for a good price. I said, I'll take it! They told me it was obsolete, and no more were coming in! I pointed out it was their own ad from that day's paper, no good. So, I asked what they had that was comparable; the closest they could come was THREE times the price.
I have been very happy with my Compaq!
And here I sit loving my almost 6 yo Gateway....:) They were very helpful when I got a nasty virus that came through McAfee. I now have Norton's and swear by it, but I do love my Gateway. All that said, I would try a Dell if I had to :) Kathy
I still like my put together from Computer Renaissance.
They are chain that is locally owned. The owners here are absolutly fabulous. I had a virus a short time ago, took the tower in, they had it ready 2 hours later. Their store is mostly shop with very good techicans.
When I bought my computer they set the whole thing up so all I had to do was go home and plug it in.
I have also got on the phone to them when a probelm comes up & they will talk me through the fix.
I bought this in Jan. 2001. I've been in the store a total of 4 times. The owner has addressed me as "Bernie" on all visits after the original time.
It still seems to be best policy to buy from locally owned businesses!
Bernie
By the way, the package he set-up for me was a KDS 17" monitier, Lexmark printer, Cannon scaner, Enjoy speakers,
CR tower,(yes they build them in their shop).
We had a power surge, storm related, shortly after we got our set-up. The printer was fried, as was the surge protector. He helped us with everything including sending us home with new items until the company warrentees came through. Never cost us a penny!

I love my Micron. If there were a reputable local, I'd go with them, but there isn't.
The machine I'm using now, I bought in mid 98. I've only had two problems with it, and one was when the modem got blown out by lightning (my fault, I didn't have it plugged into the surge protector ... it was covered by the in-home warranty anyway). The other was when a redundant cpu fan got hung up. Not a problem, since it was redundant to begin with ....
When you think that I bought my first 'puter in '93, and I went thru three before I got this one in 98 (a PB and two Compaqs) ... well, no comparison. It's about time to replace it now, and I'll be getting a new Micron. Not that there is much wrong with it, it's just too slow and outdated. I'm asking it to do things it wasn't designed to do ... I'll prolly cannibalize some of the stuff out of the old one into the new one, and eventually have the old one re-built for a back up. I love my Micron.
I wouldn't have a Gateway. In the first place, they ticked me off back in '93 when I was shopping for my first computer (superior attitude). Secondly, I don't know anyone who bought a Gateway that didn't have major problems. That's not true, I do know one guy ... he only uses his computer on weekends, to check his email. He doesn't count.
However, my DD had an Emachine for years (cost me $500 for the whole kit and caboodle - including a scanner, which I'm still using) and was very happy with it. She put that poor machine thru hell! Of course, she got a new HD after a while, added RAM every now and then, replaced the CD ROM ... I believe that machine is still running, somewhere ... LOL!

Cheri',
Well I guess you know of someone else who hasn't had any problems and loves her Gateway. I've had this almost 5 years and only had a small problem with my monitor...but who hasn't. I can't recommend any other product, as this is my first and only puter so far and I hope for many years to come yet.
Good luck RR, I know it is so confusing to make expensive decisions like this. Just get something that has a good waranty and will give you help when you need it.
Donna
I love my Dell!
Hey SoCal, from one Gateway lover to another, YIPPEE. :) I have never had a problem with my computer, except a lightning strike which wasn't Gateway's fault. My homeowner's covered it and I was back on the road. My only complaint was the anti-virus it came installed with. You couldn't pay me to have McAfee again! Norton's has been awesome. :) Kathy
The best computer I ever had was a Packard Bell bought probably 10 years ago now. A lot of People hated the Packard Bell puters too. Whenever PentiumI first came out. It STILL runs, My second computer was a Compaq, I had a few problems with it, but the kids use it now. I bought my step-daughter a dealer built computer, and she has had no problems with it, knock wood. For Christmas I upgraded her to a gig of memory, a back up hard drive, and a new CD burner. So far, so good.
I bought a Dell for myself about a year ago, and haven't had any major issues with it. Would I buy Dell again, yes.
My mom has a Gateway, and my brother has a Gateway. The computers from Hades... had more problems with those puters than I've had with ANY of the computers I own combined. I'm the "technical assistant" for my family. Any time anyone has a problem or needs something done to their puter, they call me. LOL
My sister has an older Hewlett Packard, and she has only had one crash, and I replaced her hard drive and modem.
The thing to look at is service. Many brands of computers will work just fine for various purposes, but what you need to be sure of is (1) knowledgeable and helpful tech support (2) knowledgeable and helpful customer service. Without those, the best computer is a nightmare should it have problems.
Here's my problem with Gateway:
I went to a local Gateway store in search of a new PC. I noticed that all the models on display were special purpose - one configured for audio, one configured for video, one configured for gaming, etc. When I asked the salesperson if they had just a vanilla model, she said, "I'll have to ask the manager." I continued in vain to find a general purpose machine. Finally I found one with the hardware components I wanted, but I had a question about the monitor: was it SVGA? When I asked the salesperson, she said, "I'll have to ask the manager." So long Gateway, Hello Dell.
computers are basically the same assembly of components in various arrays. Brand names are meaningless as far as identifying the source of the components. (for instance in one particular year the computer company I worked for supplied a competitor with 30 million dollars worth of PC mother boards). That leaves service as the difference and Dell as the leader, IMHO.
I would say get a Gateway! We got a dell and all we bought was problems. The people at dell are so hard to work with and to understand, as most do not have a grasp of the English language. They were rude and I was disconnected many times. Yet my mother owns a gateway and any time she has a pro she calls the help center. They assist her wonderfully. I will never have another Dell even if it was free!!! The comp is ok but the service is atrocious!!
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. We've always had good experiences with Dell, and it's a shame when a few poor employees spoil that for someone.
