last night about my vulcanicola hyb. Here is the short story:
It came from a guy that goes to Ecuador every few years to collect seeds and plants. He has a small nursey (not on the net). He grows and collects brugs(several Sanguinea types). He doesn't want folks "pestering" him.LOL This plant isn't all that easy to root. It has great perfume. It came from a collector in Ecuador. I beleive it is only 1/4?
Thats all I know. but willing to share in 2004.
my greenhouse should be finished in Jan. 60L 16W 10H. If there is enough $$ there will be 2 of them and room for a 3rd.
Due to my father-in-law having lung cancer (not a nice way to go) we were giving our time to him. He was given 3 to 6 mo. but lived a little over 11. I will now be able to "get back" to my plants.
My plants took care of themselves this summer. :-( but did just fine. Loaded with seed pods via nature!
Here is to a good year in 2004.
Peace and love to you all
Larry
there was a phone question asked
Larry,
Welcome back. Sorry about your FIL. You have been gone a long time and I knew something had happened. I'm glad you will be able to devote time to your plants again.
Larry
Hello Larry, so glad to see you back. Bless you for taking care of FIL's needs. Glad "somebody from above"? took care of your plants this summer. Sure hope to see more of you posting. I have many of your cuttings bloomed this summer for me.
wow, you are from Wilmington, in NC. I visited your estate in August and completely fell in love with it!
Larry, sure have missed you. I'm sorry about your FIL.
Glad to see you back here. We need all the brug people we can get! I am sorry about your FIL. That is so hard.
Can you post some pics of your new vulcanicola Larry?
Kell
she was under an oak all summer. :-( she hardly grew and sure didn't bloom either. I didn't want her in the sun. No time to water! now she might bloom under lights like last winter. I will send a pic when I get one.
I sure missed you folks. I had to start the pc from O (7)different times but after a second hard drive all is now well. Lots of room.
It's been a bad fall also. Dr. Treadwell (vet) that I worked for 13 years died 3 weeks ago. He let me work any time I was home. He was the reason I got to stay in school so long. BS in Biology (UNC-W) Botany and Marine Science;
BS in Poultry Science (NCSU); BS in Animal Science (NCSU) and Masters Work in Avian Nutrition (NCSU).
An Uncle died 4 weeks ago. A real good friend 5 weeks ago. My favorite Aunt 6 weeks ago. All in their late 70's to late
80's.
So I am ready for 2004 to get here!
Larry

I use to have all kind of birds!

Larry
I also hope that 2004 will turn out to be a great year.
Kris
I'm sorry to hear about your FIL, but hope that things are going well for your family now and that your 2004 will be a great year for you.
Welcome back Larry. You have been missed.I too hope that 2004 will be a better year for you and your family.
I guess you did have a bad year. I sure hope 2004 brings good things to you.
Boy Larry, it sure sounds like you are now chock full of BS!!! Congratulations.
I have given up on my parrot changing his ways. I stopped nagging him months ago. I tell him he is my pretty little green headed gosling and he believes me. Just when I think he is letting his feathers grow again, he picks them all out in 1 day. He started this when he was 5 years old after I left him for 4 days. First time I had ever left him since he was old enough to come home.
He should have a tail about 1 foot long!
Hi Larry, Glad to see you back. Wow that Hawaiian Double White you sent me last winter was incredible this summer.
I just don't know where my brain is.. old timers I guess.
The vulcanicola he sent me has grown to almost 5 ft. She has spent her whole life in the house under lights and by the double windows in the kitchen. It's just to hot here. I killed off all the Sanguinea types... :-( I am only 2 miles from the coast and summers get around 100 easy.. She was right by the A/C vent all summer. lol She looks like a Sanguinea but softer leaves to me. I hope she will bloom soon so I will know for sure. I got my fingers crossed.
Larry
Hawaiian Double White best double in my book.
How far down was the second skirt? It's really inpresive
with 6" or longer. I had one that was a good 9".
I hope to do a lot of crosses with it in 2004.

Kell!!!! Is this your baby??? Bless its heart! Maybe someone who crochets, can make him/her a sweater. Awwwww poor little thang.
Kell
get some ovaban from the vet.
try 2 mirrows one on each side
put him were he can watch > tv > window > another bird of some kind. Get one for a few weeks to try
Put 1 mg. zinc in his water every day for 2 mo.
make sure he has something new to chew on daily
stick, paper towell roll,etc.
hope this helps
L
Awwww Kell,
He is soooooo cute. I am in love! : )
Hope Larrys' info helps, Kell. That bird is such a cute "baby", maybe that's what he wants to look like, just to get your attention? Everybody loves a baby, right?
Sorry kell, I thought it was still a baby bird. Poor guy.
Larry, don't wait until 4004 to do those crosses, I'm not gonna live that long and would love to see the results.
Mary, I didn't catch that one. You are right, we wouldn't live long enough.
Thanks Larry. Ovaban is a birth control pill isn't it? Do you think his adolescent hormones are adding to his behavior? I will have to look for veterinary zinc. Is that for his skin in case he is itchy?
Unfortunately, he gets very upset if I give him new toys. He avoids that part of his cage for days. I do have a towel over the top and he spends hours pulling it thru to his side and shredding it. It is the only shredding material he likes. His diet is terrible. He will only eat peanuts and sunflower seeds of his food. But he eats off my plate and loves everything I eat just about. He loves meet and cheese. Is that bad? He loves apples and corn also.
He is a doll, very docile. I have had him since he was a baby. Before he was a feather plucker he would fly thru my entire house in seconds. Flutterng before every mirror to admire himself before he flew on. He would land on my shoulder for kisses.
I now have mixed feelings about having these beautiful animals as pets. But that is a whole other debate. As I type he is on my shoulder ...... he just got a cookie (a vanilla wafer) out of the box and is now eating it over my keyboard! what a mess..LOL! He is very affectionate and talks like crazy. If you ever talk to me on the phone, you hear him screeching, for he hates it when I talk to anyone but him.
Sounds like one spoiled baby to me. I would love to see him fully feathered. His head is beautiful.
Sorry Larry!
What was your first clue Donna? LOL I even cook special things like spaghetti for him!
Here he is just before he started to feather pick. He used to take a shower with me.
He is wet in the pic.

I sure hope you get Baby back to normal. He is cute without feathers, but much better to look at fully clothed.
He was pretty with feathers, especially the long tail.
He's adorable
Kell your poor boy! Seems some birds are prone to feather plucking in captivity.
I share your feelings about bird being kept as pets. I NEVER would have gotten Little Man (Yellow Nape Amazon)if I would have known what I do now. Recently I'd been thinking about getting him a companion, but sadly I'm very allergic to him. I couldn't imagine two birds in the house. I just feel so guilty that his needs aren't being met. Last night I had him on my shoulder and had a major allergic reaction. My eyes swelled shut and my asthma kicked into high gear. *sigh*
Here he is stealing the dogs (Molly) toys. He spends more time floor walking then he does on his cage. You don't know he's on the floor until he's right up on you. I'm afraid someone is going to step on him. It's ashame that he doesn't know how to fly.
These birds, dogs and cats are what life is all about, they sure brighten "dull days"!
Larry, it is good to see you back. Life is difficult at times and I hope 2004 is a better year for you.
Kell, what kind of bird do you have. You must worry about that cute little bird and his feather plucking.
They all got really big and when it started cooling down I had some that had a second skirt but didn't drop completely. It is a heavy bloomer too. The Snow White is also a very nice white that smells wonderful. I had thought I had read Suav White until Brugie said Snow White when I ask if anyone knew this plant because I knew it was not a Suav when it bloomed. I looked at tag again and sure enough it said Snow. I have terrible eye sight. Can you give us some info on these 2 brugs. They are both keepers for sure. If someone could get a colored double from the Hawaiian we would have a fantastic hardy double. I sent all the breeders 2 nice pieces so they can work with it as well.
LOL Kristi! What a character Little Man is! Amazing how they adapt to human surroundings so unlike their natural ones. I have to put my cats out when Baby comes out to play. He loves the floor also and now he can't fly away with no wings. I never heard of a bird allergy before.
Donna...that is tooooooo beautiful!! I just love that double white!! That huge tree/bush I posted last year that had a 1000 fowers or more on it, was supposedly from Hawaii but it looked more like the CDW.
Very pretty Donna.
Here we go again....
Donna: I said the Snow White was what you had, from Larry.
