Question about insurance

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

We just found out that our medical/dental insurance carrier has dropped our son's coverage, now that he has graduated from high school. He is a dependent, not working yet and has no plans for college. Any suggestions for individual coverage ?

To the best of my knowledge, most insurances will keep your dependent child on as long as they go into continuing education. I think it is until 22 or 23, some 25 years of age. You should call your company and see what they say about that. My son had it on ours until he graduated college. Good luck to you.

Yes, if he is in college, or tech school, he should still be covered. If your insurance company won't do it; shop around. If he goes to work, he should try to get a job with a company that offers medical benefits.

HoneyGirl, From reading your post, I take it that your son is not going to be attending any post high school training or education. If this is correct, then most company insurances drop coverage once they are 19. You are entitled to purchase insurance from your current employer through COBRA for 18 months. You have 90 days from the date of notification in which to elect or not elect coverage and then another 60 days in which to pay. HOWEVER, COBRA premiums are usually very expensive.

Due to your son's age, you should be able to buy an individual policy that isn't too expensive. They usually don't have all the extras covered like a company plan, but will provide coverage for big illnesses. I would check with your local Blue Cross Blue Shield office - and possibly call some independent insurance agents (in the phone book) to see if they can help.

We are self employed here in KY...that means very few affordable options.I hope OH is different.

We have a major medical policy with a high deductable. We set aside the deductable amount in a savings account,in case it's ever needed.Well,it was this fall.My DH spent 3 days in the hospital that wasn't expected. We had the money to pay our part and they got us right in the hospital with no red tape because I had insurance.

We are with a company called Fortis, and the premiums aren't terrible. But we have chosen a very hefty deductable.

We went to our insurance agent who handles our house and vehicles and they sold us the policy. You might ought to check with your agent to see what is available.

Thank you, everybody. I had forgotten about Cobra. That gives me some time to research and hopefully find affordable insurance. Just when I thought we were ahead of the budget ! Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas !

my son had the same thing happen to him. He found a major medical plan on line. The premiums weren't awful, but they didn't cover anything minor - no prescription coverage. Good luck - been there too...
