Uh, oh..I'm hooked...

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hi, fellow brug Mommies (& daddys) -

In late October a fellow DG person (Thanks WantabeGardener!)sent me these three brug cuttings in exchange for some seeds I offered. I had never tried brugs, so I said okay. I followed her directions carefully when they arrived and planted the stick cuttings in these clear plastic cups (so I could watch the roots grow) and put them on this windowsill under a plant light. Well..they seem to be doing fine! :-) The species are left to right:
Insignis Pink; Dr, Seuss and Jean Pasco. I'm a little baffled why the Dr. Seuss seems to be growing leaves so quickly while the Insignis Pink is still "naked". Do you all think these will remain a manageable size until Spring when I can bring them outdoors. I was advised not to repot them too quickly until they are very rootbound. Any advise? I am very pleased with their progress and hope I will soon be the Mommy of some beautiful flowers like I have seen so many of you post here!

Welcome to the select but very large group of brug nuts :-) You are definitely hooked. The cuttings look good. From the coasters under the cups I presume that you have drainage holes to keep the water from keeping the roots too wet. Water only when they need it as seen in some wilting of the leaves. Some sprout leaves sooner than others but all will catch up and be serious plants before too long. I suspect that they will need to be potted up into larger pots in several months when the root ball shows signs of being rootbound. Then the fun (joy) begins. If you come into Manhattan by train, get off at the Fordham Rd station and visit my brug haven here at the University. You are always welcome. Padre

And so it begins . . . .

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Great! You have three good ones, sure you will love their blooms. Like Padre said, "don't overwater them".

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If you look at the soil, you will see that Dr. Suess is also better rooted. That is one reason it is growing faster. Don't worry, by spring you will wonder why you were so anxious for them to grow. They look great. Diana is a super gal. She sent me some cuttings this fall of her Citronella brug. Mine don't have roots yet, so you are doing great.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

KRNYSGIRL, they got another one! Welcome to the club.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Frogs, do ya think she is really hooked? I do. Can't wait to see her a year from now. There will be more than three brugs on that shelf. LOL!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Doesn't take that long. I went from 2 to a stick garden in 3 months lol. Most of those babies came form who??! There will be 50 in the greenhouse a year from now. Look out KRNYSGIRL They want to be sure that if their babies ever croak in the cold, there are plenty to replace them. They are such pretty babies though. Take out stock in the manufacturers of the big black pots!LOL!

I think I may actually have my first Y, Poor thing got covered with ash again last week. It was very sad all grey. The passi dropped the rest of her buds. waaaa! I guess we will get it whenever the wind blows for awhile. Fires are still not completely our around here.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I hate to admit this, but I still have a couple of seedlings germinated last early spring in 4 inch pots!! They stayed at about 1 ft tall all summer and fall. LOL. And they will be fine until I finally move them up to bigger pots and then they will take off. I just do not feed them much but a foliar fees once in a while and keep them watered.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I agree, a little Peter's in the water from time to time will be good for them. Overwatering is the biggest problem; they turn to mush or get covered with mold and rot.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Congratulations, KRNYSGIRL!

I'm rather new to brugs too after having gotten my first cuttings this time last year. I grew the Insignis Pink, Dr. Seuss and Jean Pasco also :) Both the Insignis Pink and Dr. Seuss did WONDERFULLLY well for me as I had them potted. The Jean Pasco didn't particulary like where I had put it, so I didn't get blooms from it. But, the other two were just wonderful and have so much fragrance in the evenings! I took cuttings to start them again.

I've gone from one year of brugs to wishing desparately that I had a greenhouse to house them! Maybe somewhere down the line I can make that happen?

Congrats, again ☺

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

This time last year, I did not have any. Now, seedlings and cuttings, I have about 50 inside, probably another 50 in the greenhouse. These are seedlings started in August.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I think the DH needs to make me one of those stands for Christmas. Very nice!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Ihughes, I'm with you and many others. Last year at this time I had 3 or 4cuttings that i had taken from CG and white species that i had bought a couple of years ago. Now thanks to good friends in DG, I have about 25 seedlings and 10 or so growing from named cuttings. They are getting tall, ( the seedlings) and I am afraid I will have to prune them back. Donna

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Linda, your seedlings and cuttings look really good. Can't wait for pictures next summer when they are blooming.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Anna07 and MDREAMS01, I've been "brug addicted" less than a year, so this is my first winter. I started with seeds purchased online in March 2003. Looking for information on growing these seeds led me to DG and the "fever" started. DG led me to BGI and more seeds. Some of my oldest seedlings are living in the gh. I seem to start a new batch every 6 to 8 weeks.

The ones in the picture were started August, September and October. Can you believe there are more germinating as we speak. Also in the picture are cuttings from generous DG friends. By next spring, my yard should be crammed. I will not be able to grow them all out, but have two plant loving daughters who will take all I want to get rid of.

On the shelves, one unit has shelves closer together for the seedlings and short plants. That unit has 2 shop lights on each shelf with 4 cool 25w tubes each shelf.

Unit 2 has shelves farther apart for taller plants. That unit has 1 shop light with 2 cool 40w tubes each shelf. The electric co. loves me. Plants will stay inside until spring (it will probably be a jungle in there by then).

I have datura and other seeds that I will start in Jan-Feb.

Less that a year??? It seems to me you have grown Brugs for most of your life! Your plats look so good!!!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Indeed! I think we should have a RU in SC next Spring ~ lol :)

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Morph that sounds great.Would be a happy bunch of brug people. My plants are doing okay I am still learning and on here its a lot to keep up with.I saw the pvc growlight stand that someone had on here and yes my brother had left some here and now I have one .I was so happy untill I priced the lights . So I have told my kids agrowlight for Christmas would be nice.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Yes, good gift idea! I'm not sure if there's a thread about this or not, but I'd like to know how brugs benenfit or not from grow lights vs. regular fluorescent ones.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I just use a shop light, usually around $8-$10 for the fixture, and regular cool tubes. You can use 1 cool and 1 warm per fixture.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Ihughes,
........ I saw these shelves at Menard's, of course 'after' I built a couple of PVC units.
...........They sell them in chrome or black powder coat. And get this ,they are sold as separate components, so you can make up the configuration that you prefer.

BTW, Your plants look gorgeous ;~P

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey, Scooter, do you have a link?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I would not be able to make it through the winter without my "grow room". Here are baby blackberry lilies and hellebores that I started several months ago.

Hellebore and mahonia, I just love to take different seeds and see what happens.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

lhughes, what is the light-colored stuff on the surface of your seedlings?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Looks like sand maybe. I need to do that to keep down the fungus gnats. Great pictures. What kind of lighting do you have?
