Yea we finally have it 95% finished. Back door will have to wait untill spring. I'm out of time. Gonna be a long cold wet day today getting everythinging in it and digging up and repotting what I want to over winter today. I really hate out winters. Going to get down to low 30's tonight but then back up to mid 40's for tomorrow night. Grrrrrrrr!!! It is 18' long, 12' wide and a little over 6' high . DH made the door 44" wide so no problems getting anything in it
New Green House
Donna,we are sitting at 18º,and dropping,I love the GH,how does the PVC hook at the bottom to the 2 x 6??
Donna, it is a very nice Greenhouse. Did you bury the plastic into the ground?
Root we used electrical pipe clamps. No Monika as my yard tends to be damp we pulled the plastic under the wood tightly and stapled to wood from the inside. Then mulched heavily around the edge to seal out air flow from the ground. I only put plastic on floor in center to about 2 feet from edges to allow for water drainage and prevent a lot of grass growth on the inside.
Congratulations. Obviously a lot of work, but most rewarding. Happy gardening in your new greenhouse. Padre
WOW! Looks great!
I had to show this to my husband (hint, hint to my dh). I have to ask, how much did this cost you? Where did you get the plastic from?
Great Job! You will be glad this winter! Hopefully you will have blooms all winter to play with.
I agree with Tracey that you'll love it but you'll be sorry!! Know why? Because now you're gonna do just like I did FILL IT UP!!! Then next year you have to do a greenhouse expansion just like I did.
Then you fill it up again just like I have done and now I need to do another expansion.
Can you ever have a greenhouse that is big enough??
It's very nice Donna,if you're like the rest of us you'll be spending much time inside there. I go in mine everyday after work just to get my mind off the job. It's a great stress reliever also.
Very nice, Donna.
You will enjoy your greenhouse much (o:
Oh.......I am leaf green with envy.......that looks sooooo gooood Donna.....Now how are you going to heat this....what will your source of heat be?
Dee
Nice. I'm sure you will be so glad to have it. It is such a great stress reliever, enjoy.
Donna, it's beautiful. Please post another photo when you get it filled up!
Donna, you are going to have so much fun with your new greenhouse. I am so jealous. This morning I looked out the front door here and my birdbath is frozen solid. Guess I better put the heater in it now. I love seeing all these pictures where the grass is green and you can tell the air is warm, at least warmer than we are. Good luck with growing all of your special babies in there.
Beautiful Donna!!!!! Yep...gonna have to save those pics and do a little hinting myself....;-)))
great job Donna! Do you neeed a heater in your zone or will your greenhouse work unheated?
Nice job!
It looks great...
Very nice Donna, and like the others have said you will surely enjoy it this winter. Do you have to worry too much about heating it. Not as much as I do in zone 5. Donna aka rutholive.
Hey Donna, did your finally get DH to follow your instructions, lol?
It looks great--I know you're a happy girl too! Going to 27 here tonite ):
Hi DonnaB, good looking house. I need one but just wondered if it needs to be in full sun or can I put one in part sun (2-3 hours/day). My little house is so full of plants that I need to do something!!! And with Christmas coming I have to make room for the tree. And do you heat it? Ya'll did a great job!!!!
I have to heat some for a fews days at a time. Tonight I have the small electric heater in there. Hope it's enough. DH forgot to go get propane in the tank for the cooker I was planning on using. Last year the small electric heater was plenty for the small GH 8' long x 7' wide x 9' high. PoorGeorge I would think you needed more than 3 hours a day sun for growth but anything is possible. If you have everything you need to build it, have someone who knows a little carpentry, it can be built in a weekend. I got my plastic from Gothic Arch Greenhouses 1-800-531-4769 out of Mobile. They take the order and it is shipped from the manufacturer. I got 6mil white 4 yr warrenty 24' wide x 28' long 55.78 plus 15.00 for shipping but shipping is determined by how far you are from the manufacturer.
Looks great Donna! I am sure that you and DH are very proud. Catsmeow is exactly right though, don't put that back door on just yet, you may be expanding. We had one just like the one you built three years ago and have been expanding every year.
That's the nice thing about the design. It can be expanded without much trouble.
I was wondering about that plastic. It is white. Can the light get thru ok? Does it filter it? I used clear from HD. A huge roll is $35 and I think it is good for 2 years. But since I take mine down in the spring, I toss it and use new each year. But 1 roll was enough for 2 years +. I do not believe it is made for rGH.
This is my first time posting and I hope I'm not intervening where I shouldn't but DonnaB has her hoops set up for a coldframe at this point. When Spring gets here, she will put clear film on for a GH. And, NO, the light/heat cannot get through the white plastic. That is the point; to keep the plants in dormancy until which time she wishes them to "come alive," then they will put clear plastic on. Hopefully they are using GH film and not just "clear poly" because clear poly is milky and useless for growing plants. They need the full light spectrum to develop properly.
I get my film from www.MDplantsandsupplies.com in Baltimore. They are also in Richmond, VA. A 20' x 100' roll is about $123.00 and it is good for 4 years. It will last longer, but after 4 years in the sun, it will start turning milky and must be changed. I haven't built a GH yet because we bought a house and moved and I couldn't build one where we were, on a hillside.
I have been doing loads of reading and studying on this. I am one of Mike McGroarty's www.freeplants.com "graduates" and I am excited about what I've learned in the past 2 years coming to fruit, soon. We've planted lots of bulbs for overwintering and I hope they make it through. They are in pots on the North side of my 20' x 28' workshop. Grape hyacinth, tulips, jonquils, etc.
Donna, your green house l;ooks great wish mine had been a little bigger hope you enjoy it fully
welcome to DG Electric Bob!
Hi Bob
Nope not changing to clear in the spring. Everything will come out in March or April. My small old GH had milky plastic and everything out grew the house by January. Then I had to play the in and out game until March. I just want them alive and slowly growing but not dormant. It is in full sun from daylight to dusk. We just get sporadic cold here. It's warm enough at times in January and Febuary to wear shorts. Our temps are like a roller coaster ride
Gee Donna, your weather sounds better than mine and I am in a warmer zone. Well, maybe we have such warm days in Jan. and Feb!. I can't remember! LOL
This winter is going to be bad. last year we did not have our one and only frost till January. we already have had one this year.
Hi Electric_Bob. WELCOME!! How great you are so handy. Looks like you keep busy! So the Home Depot clear poly I use is preventing any plant growth? I loved your link. I will have to spend sometime there. Do you have or are you planning to grow some brugs?
Hi Donna, your GH looks exactly like mine. My sons built it for me a couple years ago. Hope you got everything inside it last night, I worked all day yesterday trying to outrun the freeze.
I hear ya Avis. I worked non stop from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. DH forgot to get propane for the cooker so I had to unload everything that I already had in the small GH and put in the new big one so had no room to dig the brugs I want to over winter. Had to use the electric heater from the small GH in the big GH. Friend is coming by from Texas friday and getting some stuff I promised so that will give me a little room. I want to over winter Whiskers really bad since she is loaded with seedpods. She was right next to Butterfly and Valley Misty Pink. Should get some good seeds if the light frost didn't hurt them last night. I'm going to leave her in the ground until we expect another hard cold snap.
hello,I am new here also and Donna this looks great. Right now I am using a double car garage and took over a bedroom today, I have a small greenhouse in the making but nothing like this.wait till my sons come over for turkey Each plate is a hour of there time .My small bed room is full of brog cutting.I dont have any of the pretty ones I have seen on here but hopefully soon I am still trying to figure out proper names for the ones I have. All I know is they are pretty.Did not know so many where out there.
Welcome to Daves MDREAMS01. Do you have a name that we could use other than your user name? Mine is Shirley. Glad to have you here and maybe we can help you out with identifying your brugs if you have pictures that you can post.
