The Northern Lights May Be Visible Tonight

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I am on the GSE-Aurora Alert mailing list. I received this today:

The disturbance from a series of solar flares on the 18th of November was expected to arrive on the 20th, but the size of the events was one-tenth that of the events near Halloween. We predicted high activity, but did not issue an auroral alert.

The magnitude of the magnetic cloud following the shock was more than twice as large, however, and the magnetic disturbance and auroras at Earth were correspondingly larger for the first 12 hours after the arrival around 0730 GMT. The magnetic field of the solar wind will probably now be directed northward for 12 hours (daylight hours across the US), so the development of aurora will be somewhat abated. The disturbance was great enough, however, to generate a magnetic storm that will be accompanied by auroral substorms for the next two days.

It is difficult to predict the magnitude of these events, but auroras could occur all across the US, northern Europe, Russia to 50 deg. Lat. and southern Australia and New Zealand.

It turns out the aurora was visible here last night (Thursday November 20) in central Ohio. It was red.

Also a meteor was seen locally that had a strong sulfur smell. People in a specific suburb here are being asked to check their backyards to see if it landed there.

All of this is per a local TV weatherman.

Wow, what a thing for us Ohioans. I noticed last night how clear the sky was, how bright the stars. I just asked Howie if he'd like to drive somewhere and see if we can see the aurora tonight, and he said yes. Off we go!

Well, skip that -- he said it's probably too late now. Last night they were visible around 1:00am, he said. :S

We saw them on Thursday night here in central Missouri. Only the white and red portions and very 'foggy' looking. My parents lived in Chicago for 22 years and spoke of seeing them often.
