I have heard mention of this plant in a white bloom I have only heard and seen the orange-- Does anyone know where I can get it? Tracy
Has anyone heard of White Lions Tail Leonorus
There are a couple of Leonotis species that have white forms, perhaps the best known is Leonotis leonurus var. alba. Here's a google search for a photo http://images.google.com/images?q=leonotis+white&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi
I don't know where you might get seeds or plants in the USA but Chiltern Seeds have them
I have one, bought it from Kartuz greenhouses.
The problem with it is that it blooms when the days get shorter and that's about when the first frost hits here. It got through the first frost this time, but it's really no point growing it unless you have a greenhouse to put it in for the winter.
Paintedlady, is the orange form also daylight sensitive? Do you have any seeds to trade of the white form? Thanks!
I grow L. nepetifolia (one of the oranges) and it does seem to bloom late, but if started inside, I enjoy a couple of months of bloom and time to save some seeds.
As far as I understand it, both the orange and the white are fall bloomers. I had an orange one last year that didn't even have time to bloom. The white one I have now was planted early and is blooming now, but I'm sure the frost is going to get it before the seeds have time to mature.
The white one is actually kind of boring looking so if I ever try another one it will be the orange one.
I bought mine as plants, and if overwintered in a greenhouse it might do better next year. Actually the nursery I got my orange one from had one blooming in the greenhouse in the winter.
I have never tried it from seed.
It germinates easily from seed!!! IT is a perennial here for me in Zone 7 and would probably be down to zone 5/6. It blooms late june-mid july here also--- It is a plant that if kept trimmed is a nice specimen plant/herb otherwise it will get lanky and sprawl out-- Tracy
Take cuttings of the white one!
I took cuttings of my orange before our frost and they seem to be rooting fine.....
It is a perennial in 7? Hmmm, mine have never come back nor self-seeded. I was thinking I read they are only hardy in 9 or 10. I'll try cutting mine back instead of pulling them out and see how it goes.
Badseed--- I am talking about the pink variety---"motherwort". The orange and white varietys are annuals! Tracy
