The Smell of Cut Grass

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Cut grass is always described as a good smell. I can't stand it and never could. Anyone else out there who dares admit that they don't like it?

Maybe it's the kind of grass? I wonder if different varieties of grass smell different. I know that there's a smell you catch on the breeze sometimes after someone's mowed a field or ditch, that isn't exactly grass but is a bit sweeter - I always wondered what plant that is.

I don't like or dislike ordinary cut grass smells, but I REALLY hate it when it has sat for awhile - smells like old sweaty banana peels to me.

Nope, I love that sweet smell if cut grass or better yet a hay field when harvested. Although, I admit I do not care much for the smell of mowed clover.

I don't think the kind makes a difference. I didn't like Pennsylvania grass and I don't like California grass. I didn't like it when the grass was mostly Bermuda and I don't like it now that the grass is mostly Marathon. I dislike the smell so much that it makes me half sick sometimes.

Kelli, Do you have much of a lawn to cut? I used to live in Seal Beach, CA and we had a teeny tiny one that needed frequent watering and never grew alot anyway.

You could try planting mint at the edge of the lawn, or an annual like coriander for example. Then when you cut the lawn make sure to cut some of the overhanging herb. Both of those herbs have a real strong scent and I find that refreshing on a hot summer day while mowing...

We don't have that big of a lawn and the smell doesn't last long enough to be a problem. My husband does the mowing, so I don't have to be outside if I don't choose to be.

we have a big farm house yard and cut it with a riding mower. I just love the smell but maybe it is because our yard is mostly wild grasses. When DH cuts the old orchard with his hay mower it smells even better and that is all native grass. Here's to summer which is all to short here in Michigan.

O.K. I'm a weirdo. I can accept that. ;-)
