Rocky Mountains

Last weekend I was at an Alpine Weekend. One of the speakers spent 6 weeks in the Rockies visting Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Alberta. The trip started in central Colorado exploring Mt Evans and then moving to Pikes Peak. They then went to the San Juan Mountains in south Colorado. They them travelled tp Utah and Idaho and into Wyoming to visit Medicine Bow, Yellow Stone, Grand Teton, Bear Tooth, and Big Horn areas. They finished in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta.

We saw Ten Miles Peak, Dillon Lake, Summit Lake, Mt Bross, Double Cut Over Look, Engineer Pass, Wasatch Mountains, Leidy Peak, Bald Mountain, Deseret Peak, Naomi Mountains, Bear River Range, Abyss lake, Cinnamon Pass, Mt Timpangos, Albion Basin, Borah Peak, Double Springs Divide and the list goes on
The Rockies have plants which are alpine, arctic, steppe and boreal.

We were shown 280 slides in one session using two screens.
I now have a list of 12s of plants I want to add to my new scree and rock beds.

If you have never been there during snow melt time I urge you to do so.

Mark, I have lived in the Rockies for much of my life now. I find it very beautiful no matter the time of year. Have been to many of the more nothern places you mentioned. What memories you have given me tonight. Thanks.

have you been there in spring during snow melt time to see alpines?

Mark, my husband and I live in the San Juan/La Plata mountains in the southwestern corner of Colorado. You are so right -- the snowmelt time of spring is absolutely beautiful in the high passes and valleys.

Mark, Many of the alpines are very pretty. I used to collect them in the town I grew up in but they won't thrive where I live now. When I was collecting them I would ride my horse into the wilderness area next to my town and collect seeds or very small starts. Many did well and only a few didn't do well but I was located at a mile high and fairly high humidity. Presently still live in the Rocky range but here it is hot and very dry in the summers.

we saw an area of desert up in the mountains.
