what edger should I get?

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

DH wants an edger. Everyone in our neighborhood immaculately edges their lawn. We want to have that look, too, and so we need a machine that will do the job. He thinks he wants a gas one. I think that seems to be a very expensive tool for an infrequently needed job - or am I just looking at the wrong tools?

Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your assistance...

Love,

If your yard is very large a gas one is what I would get. The gas one isn't restricted by the length of the cord and really is probably safer should you ever accidently cut that electrical cord. They are expensive but if you like the look they do then it probably is a good expense for you. I don't like the look or the twisting of my ankle when I step off the walkway into that trench (never will remember that there is a trench there. lol) I had to edge all the walks at our home and the church when I was a teenager and did it all with a hand trencher and wheelbarrow to carry off the trimmings. WHAT A JOB on two corner lots!

My DH uses his gasoline weed trimmer for this job. He has one that the head breaks loose from the standard position and can be turned on its side to use as an edger. That has kept it down to one tool - two jobs. If you are interested in looking in to it, let me know & I will look up make & model for you

my mantis has one-i have never even used it! ;)

My Dad has one that he bought 30 years ago. This summer it finally gave up the ghost, and I let him use my mantis with the edger attachment.

Well, the next weekend they went and bought a new edger. Turns out the mantis attachment just didn't do the trick as well as he wanted. LOL.

I'll have to find out what kind he bought.

Hey Notmartha,I haven't used my mantis edger either, but am going to try it out on my perennial border. Do you happen to know how to slow the tiller down? mine runs very fast!zippo! It feels like I don't have the proper control it runs so fast, the hand control goes from slow then super fast, no in between.

I use my mantis edger all the time. works great! Zen you need to adjust your throttle cable or something. the engine should respond to any throttle setting from idle to full speed. I also use the wire brush attachment to banish the weeds in the cracks of the sidewalk and driveway. LOVE my Mantis!
