I raised mules for several years, breeding a variety of horse mares to donkeys to produce a strong animal that is larger then the sire. A mule is the result of breeding a donkey male known as a Jack, with a horse mare. The physical appearance resembles the donkey side of the family more than the horse side, narrow feet, tail that is not as hairy on the top half as a horse tail, and very large ears. The voice is also more like the donkey. A hinny is the result of the opposite cross and resembles the horse more with rounder feet, more hair on the tail, smaller ears and I don't know about the voice. Put simply, these hybrid crosses resemble the sire's side the most.

Scooterbug, one of the mares I used to have had been on the QH track for 2 seasons, she raced in California. When I got her it was without papers, and she had a crippled leg from a fence accident so was lame at a walk, but she produced beautiful colts. She was very hard to catch or to handle, ran over me a few times and so I sold her before she hurt me. Sometimes you just have to.

Just love those pictures of the young Shoe! Aren't we lucky to have those? So many family pictures are few & far between!

Shoe, LOL at your DW saying not to be frugal and use all you cared to use :) I just never feel clean ~ a product of modernization I suppose!

Those poor Romans being considered outlandish when they were just getting clean! It's amazing to me that bathing somehow got a bad rap and was extinct for a few centuries!

We are a strange species, don't ya think?
