BOUGAINVILLEA

Honor, MI(Zone 5b)

While I was looking at all the stunning photos in the 2003 Photo Contest, I saw a plant called Bougainvillea. I have never seen one before, but I sure fell in love with it!
My question(s): would this plant grow in my Northern Michigan climate? What kind of care and attention do they need? And does anyone know where I could order one from? I would love to grow one of those beauties! Thanks for any info.

I just got some from a co-op this past spring. They did great all summer. They do need to be brought inside in the fall. I'm hoping they will winter over OK in the house.

I haven't grown one, yet, but they are popular here as container plants. They need protection, even in zone 9.

My cousin has one in a pot that doesn't seem to have thorns or spines ... I want one like that. =)

They start getting damage at about 30 to 32F. They get a good bit of damage at 28F.

You can buy them from Stokes Tropicals. http://www.stokestropicals.com I'd wait until warm weather to order. In the meantime, get the Stokes Tropicals printed catalogue. Talk about serious eye candy!

They are excellent pot plants, and so fast growing, that they can even be treated as annuals. The less you feed and water them, the more they bloom. They love heat. Some varieties, such as "Barbara Karst" can endure temps down to at least 25 degrees. California just wouldn't be the same without Bougainvilleas. They are tough and undemanding.

sierrawoman, they may be fast growing and usable as annuals in CA, but not in my 6/7 zone. A bright sunny window is called for here, and summers outside. I kept one growing for years until I moved and it caught a chill. 'Barbara Karst' is one of the best for red-violet color. I now have a small variegated one from the co-op which is looking good under lights.

I have 2 in hanging baskets and the one bloomed all ssummer, the other (variegated) bloomed from early spring till mid summer.
yes ,this past year they were in the GH all winter but before I had the GH they grew and bloomed in the house over the winter,in front of my southern facing sliding windows......they just did better in the GH
